The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

 

Job Title:           Community Advocate Specialist 

Position:           Full-Time

FLSA:                 Non-Exempt

Department:   Research & Advocacy

Reports To:     Research & Advocacy Director

Salary:             Candidates can expect to be offered $24.19 as an hourly rate for a new hire in the role. 

 

The Community Advocate Specialist ensures fair and equal treatment for all American Muslims, using advocacy techniques to provide direct services to those impacted by bias.  The Community Advocate Specialist also partners with similar community advocates within CAIR to enhance the organization’s advocacy services.   The Community Advocate Specialist interacts with our legal staff, maintains educational materials for (KYR’s) workshops, and facilitates training sessions within the American Muslim community.

 

Primary Function

o Serve as the primary contact on advocacy complaints within the Research & Advocacy Department.

o Provide intake services and referrals through telephone, in-person, or virtual interviews.

o Advocate on behalf of the American Muslim community to ensure the needs and expectations are met by coordinating with internal departments such as legal.

o Conduct individual work with complainants to move their complaints to successful resolution.

 

Secondary Functions

o Create and maintain a mentorship program and collaborative affinity group for advocacy advocates within CAIR.

o Create and maintain an advocacy manual and document templates relevant to advocacy casework that caseworkers throughout CAIR can use.  The manual will need to include case workflow, best practices, a page on cair.com that complainants can use to access relevant docs (e.g., anti-doxing guidance, template Eid off request for employees and students, etc.)

o Ensure consistent advertising of CAIR’s services and success to increase incoming complaints.

o Maintain or create Know Your Rights trainings that can be presented by non-legal advocacy staff.

 

Outreach

o Establish relationships with community partners.

o Coordinate Know Your Rights (KYR) presentations for the community.

o Represent CAIR at community, legal, and other meetings, and functions.

o Provide non-legal KYR related training to the community upon request.

o See out opportunities for advocacy-related partnership within and outside of the American-Muslim community.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

o Provide administrative support to the Research & Advocacy team, including data and research.

o Research, investigate, and report on community issues.

o Work with the legal attorneys to collect, document, and analyze information from complaints.

o Document statistics in monthly, quarterly, or yearly reports.

o Assist with research and analysis related to intakes.

o Develop and update policy and training materials on client advocacy issues.

o Develop and maintain an advocacy database.

o Assist with the planning, preparation, and presentation of all advocacy training sessions.

o Perform any other duties as required.

Qualifications

o Bachelor’s degree in political science, International Relations, or related field.

o Assertive nature, detail orientation, good interpersonal and diplomatic skills, strong negotiation skills, creative problem solving.

o Proven client advocate or similar experience in a non-profit organization.

o Strong research and fact-finding skills

o Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
