Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS), is seeking a Refugee Policy Advocate Intern who will assist the Advocacy Office in expanding its capacity to conduct outreach to the new Administration and the 115th Congress, on religious minorities who are fleeing persecution. Reporting to the Refugee Advocacy Officer, you will engage with LIRS staff members and LIRS constituencies, networks, and coalition partners.

Located in LIRS's Washington DC Advocacy office, this a full time (40 hours per week) opportunity for a duration of one year with an expected state date of April 2017. The intern will be compensated $15 per hour and is eligible for full medical benefits.

Duties:
• Communicate and represent LIRS's legislative policies and positions, with respect to religious minorities who are persecuted to Congress, the Administration, LIRS constituencies, networks, and coalition partners.
• Develop written materials, legislative analyses, action alerts and updates to inform LIRS constituencies and networks in advocacy campaigns.
• Track assigned issues, concerns and policy developments and report on these to the Advocacy unit and other LIRS staff.
• Contribute to coalition advocacy plans and activities, advancing substantive policies while fostering strong and collaborative relationships.
• Performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Commitment to LIRS's core mission and values and an ability to model those values in relationship with colleagues and partners.
• Bachelor's degree in a related field. 
• Knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes. 
• Ability to quickly master substantive subject matter, implement legislative strategies, and work independently and under pressure. 
• Experience synthesizing and communicating complex legislative issues and processes to LIRS staff and coalitions. 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to tailor persuasive messages to different audiences including policymakers, constituents and colleagues.
• Ability to maintain and nurture collegial relationships with congressional staff, coalition partners and Lutheran partners. 
• Familiarity with nonprofit advocacy work.
