Position description

HIAS seeks a Case Management Intern to support its Westchester staff with outreach, case management, and other resettlement services for refugee and SIV clients serviced by HIAS New York-Westchester through grant programs funded by the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration (PRM), Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), and the State of New York’s Bureau of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance (BRIA). The duration of this internship is May through August 2017.

The position is unpaid but may be pursued for academic credit. A semester or quarter commitment is required. 

Essential Functions: 

•Undergoes training with HIAS New York/Westchester staff.

•Provides support during intake interviews with clients.

•Researches and assist in the development of materials for conducting cultural orientation for clients.

•Assists with coordinating quarterly community consultations, as needed.

•Supports staff with coordinating volunteer orientations and trainings.

•Translates and interprets for clients, as necessary.

•Assists in the preparation of case files and notes and compiles required documentation.

•Works with the HIAS New York/Westchester staff to manage the volunteer database.


•Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Social Work, psychology, international relations or a related field.

•Fluency in Arabic, Kurdish, Dari and/or Pashto highly preferred.

•Previous experience in a social services environment preferred; cultural sensitivity and excellent cross cultural communication skills.

•Ability to work with diverse populations; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

•Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
