The Career Development Office coordinates activities that are a critical function to forward the School’s goals for continued prominence in the information educational field. The UMSI Career Development Office is a progressive office in that we manage and lead career development services, resources, workshops, and engaged learning programs that are both curricular and co-curricular in nature. We accomplish our goals of helping students achieve career success and satisfaction by aligning our work in support of the School’s mission and the mission of the University.
This position is a new role in the School of Information and is an excellent opportunity for someone who seeks to refine existing global programs and processes and develop new programs for students’ global engagement.
Reporting to the Director of Engaged Learning, the Global Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for a broad range of activities as it relates to our study abroad advising and programming. The successful candidate will be able to advise students (both graduate and undergraduate) about opportunities for studying abroad, international internships, and engagement. They will be responsible for continually developing and coordinating an interdisciplinary, graduate Global Information Engagement Program, as well as coordinating an undergraduate faculty-led international program, and contributing to the Peace Corps Partnership programs. In addition, this candidate will be in charge of developing strong working partnerships and relationships with global study abroad vendors and institutions, School of Information leadership, and constituents across campus.
Student Facing Programming (50%):
Coordinate and develop global educational programs for graduate and undergraduate students, in consultation with the Director of Engaged Learning and UMSI administration. This will include developing and implementing strategies for engaging students, promoting and maintaining international collaborative partnerships between partner organizations and institutions and the School of Information, working with faculty to identify new partners and negotiating agreements with relevant academic units; working to develop long term relationships that promote global learning and collaboration around information topics and scholarship areas.
Advise students on global learning opportunities available through the School of Information, the University, and through informal and formal global partnership. This will include one on one advising, information sessions, pre-departure and re-entry orientations.
Assist faculty with the student selection process for global engagement program, currently including the Global Information Engagement Program, and anticipated programs for undergraduate students.
Coordinate student application and selection, pre-departure preparation, travel arrangements and accommodations and on-site student experience, for global study opportunities. Ensure the safety of students while en route and at international destinations through proper preparation of students and vetting of destination.
In collaboration with the Internship Program Coordinator, develop a series of workshops and programs on international internship and employment options and strategies for achieving and funding such opportunities.
Develop role to be a known and knowledgeable resource for students on global opportunities and funding internal to the School of Information and the University of Michigan, and externally.
Program Administration (20%):
Work closely with the Internship Program Coordinator to research and identify new and emerging international opportunities for undergraduate and graduate internships.
Contribute to the development and maintenance of formal MOU partnerships with international institutions for study abroad. Communicate regularly and advise students on partnerships, prepare students for departure, and welcome incoming exchange program students. Provide both incoming and outgoing exchange students with appropriate advising, resources, and programming to have a successful engagement experience at the School of Information and/or abroad. Cultivate, implement and manage partnership and cooperative agreements in alignment with School of Information strategic global priorities.
Internal and External Collaboration (15%):
Collaborate with appropriate committees, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and School faculty members with regards to policies and curriculum matters related to global opportunities.
Research and network with other U-M global opportunities across campus, seeking partnership opportunities for School of Information students and faculty. Network with peer Universities and programs, managing our relationship with the iSchool Consortium.
Collaborate with other University offices, including the Center for Global and Intercultural Studies, the International Institute, and Area Studies programs, to promote international and intercultural learning; communicate with the University's other academic and student services offices; and perform other similar duties at the direction of the director. Represent the School of Information at the International Education Network (IEN) group and other UM internationally-oriented groups.
In collaboration with the School of Information’s Marketing and Communications office, design and create communications and marketing materials to publicize global related activities. Maintain content of relevant UMSI webpages.
Work closely with the UMSI staff in Student Affairs and Finance to manage scholarship and financial aid opportunities for students pursuing international learning opportunities.
Identify and cultivate relationships with grant providers to support the global work of the School of Information in general.
Manage and oversee administrative infrastructure related to global student programs, internships and overseas research work including MCompass, travel registry, travel insurance, safety/security training, Clery Act training and reporting, and monitoring travel warnings. Advise Deans, relevant staff, and faculty regarding travel warnings and travel bans or other travel challenges to student destinations.

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. Will require working during non-business hours and on weekends.
This position will be based in the UMSI Engagement Center. This role will require travel to multiple locations on and off campus and will occasionally require domestic travel and will require some international travel.
