Position description

The Century Foundation (TCF), an independent progressive public policy think tank, seeks an energetic and passionate Communications Manager or Communications Director to help boost the impact of our research nationwide. Serving as TCF’s chief press secretary and media pitcher, the Communications Manager/Director will increase media attention for TCF's research and experts, elevate TCF’s reputation, and help coordinate national communications efforts.

Reporting to the Vice President of Communications, the Manager/Director will proactively pitch TCF’s research and experts to reporters and thought leaders, spearhead congressional outreach, help manage TCF’s social media presence and, at Director level, supervise TCF’s Media and Events Coordinator.

This position is based in TCF's New York office, however for the right candidate, we would consider relocating this function to D.C. In either case, the ideal candidate will have an established network of reporters, producers, opinion leaders, advocates, and congressional staff in the nation’s capital.

Duties:

  • Proactively pitch stories to national reporters and outlets and secure high profile coverage of TCF’s work
  • Prep experts for media appearances and help to hone TCF’s message across policy areas
  • Write press releases, opinion pieces, emails, and communications strategy documents
  • Coordinate outreach to congressional staff and liaise with stakeholders on TCF research, briefings, and events
  • Work as part of a team to advance long-term policy objectives in a competitive environment
  • Help manage TCF’s social media platforms, with a focus on Twitter strategy and growth
  • Work with TCF’s digital and production team on new and innovative approaches to drive media coverage
  • Serve as a mentor and coach to TCF staff and experts who interact with the media
  • Promote TCF’s work to thought leaders in Washington, D.C.

The Communications Manager/Director should be comfortable providing high level advice to senior staff and experts, but also willing to jump in to get the job done.

TCF is based in New York, with a satellite office in Washington, D.C. Its fellows come from academia, journalism, and public service, but share a commitment to the TCF’s abiding belief in the power of ideas.

Qualifications

  • At least 4 years (Manager) or 6 years (Director) experience working as a press secretary, or similar, on issues related to public policy
  • Demonstrated ability to secure print, radio, and TV coverage on issues related to TCF’s issue areas
  • A robust network of national media contacts, including D.C.-based reporters and producers
  • Contacts on Capitol Hill and experience working in a legislative environment to push for policy change
  • Expertise in one or more of TCF’s policy areas such as education, labor relations, income inequality, health care, foreign policy, or surveillance and privacy
  • Expertise in social media and digital strategy
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • A commitment to TCF’s values and ideals
