Position description

Reuters is looking for a top-notch reporter to do enterprise journalism in Mexico and lead our coverage of major news stories.

With Donald Trump disrupting bilateral relations and a presidential election looming next year in which Mexico’s own maverick populist is seeking to shake up the system, there has rarely been a more exciting moment to report from the region. The international spotlight will focus closely on Mexico over the coming year as it wrestles with Trump’s government over the trade and immigration issues that the U.S. president has placed at the heart of his agenda. Mexico’s government must also tackle rising drug violence and a sputtering economy as it seeks to defuse popular discontent ahead of next year`s presidential polls.

The chief correspondent job is designed to provide the freedom to dive deep into the biggest stories, from the NAFTA talks, to corruption and the liberalization of Mexico’s energy sector, and transnational crime networks. The successful candidate will be an accomplished writer and editor, with a proven track record of landing exclusives and delivering in-depth investigative pieces.

Based in Mexico City, the successful candidate will be part of the Mexico bureau leadership team and will work closely with the Latin America enterprise editor and stringers across the region.

Good Spanish is essential.
