Position description

This post is located in the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT). New York is considered an "H" hardship family duty station. The incumbent reports to Team Leader of Policy and Coordination Unit and Director of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism through the Deputy Director.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sourcesand relevant contacts in the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they concern the countries affected by terrorism.
  • Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground.
  • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations.
  • Participates in the conceptualization, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmatic activities relating inter alia to the formulation of new approaches to addressing conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism.
  • Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft talking points, background papers, analysis, reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Provides substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
  • Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
  • Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.

Work Experience

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, conflict resolution, or related area.
  • Experience in developing in-depth policy analysis and report writing.
  • Experience in providing support to intergovernmental body.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience working in the field of counter terrorism or related area.
  • Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
