Position Overview

The Research Assistant for the US-Korea Institute (USKI) will be responsible for research support, event planning and logistics, grant preparation and reporting, budget tracking, some general administrative duties. The incumbent will work with various USKI partners to meet program requirements; will help prepare and draft grant proposals and reports.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research Duties:

  • Conducting background research using traditional and online sources
  • Drafting memos and reports on key issues related to Korean affairs, Northeast Asian security, energy security and nuclear policies
  • Preparing briefing books on topics ranging from energy security, nuclear policies to maritime and air security for projects and events
  • Tracking key issues and developments in the news and from official sources related to assigned project areas
  • Attending events and prepare reports and memos on the specified topics to brief USKI staff and stakeholders
  • Identifying and building networks of scholars and experts in specified fields to enhance USKI research and programs

Administrative Duties:

  • Tracking project budgets, prepare contracts and manage vendor payments
  • Arranging event logistics, including arrange flight and accommodations of speakers and VIPs, room set up, catering, A/V and other details
  • Preparing event materials, including invitations, agendas, handouts/programs, and other materials as needed
  • Drafting event notes and summaries for website and reporting
  • Updating website and social media pages as necessary

Grant Management:

  • Conducting background research as needed for new grant proposals
  • Assisting USKI staff in the drafting and compilation of materials/information needed for grant reports to funders (will vary depending on specific funder requirements)


Bachelor’s degree in Asian studies, international relations, or relevant field required; Master’s degree preferred.  Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Some related experience required; 1-2 years work experience preferred.  Work experience with international colleagues or in an international setting a plus.  Some prior experience with budget management and/or grant management a plus.
