Position description

Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) supports, enables and empowers dozens of partner organizations and thousands of journalists working on environmental media, with a particular focus on the developing world. The Information Officer will play a hands-on role in EJN projects being carried out around the world and will primarily be responsible for the management and development of EJN’s presence online. This position supports EJN’s digital media activities, including the visualization and distribution of datasets collected through project activities, by directly collaborating with targeted beneficiaries engaged through EJN’s platforms. In addition, the Information Officer has a leading role in the continual gathering and verification of programmatic data through the implementation and refinement of a multi-year monitoring and evaluation plan designed to assess progress corresponding to EJN’s results framework.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manage the development, operations and administration of digital and online media work within the EJN portfolio, including the continued development and system administration of earthjournalism.net and our GeoJournalism platforms;
  • Manage the monitoring and evaluation of EJN activities, including the gathering, analysis and reporting of target indicators and surveys, and coordinating with other M&E staff at Internews;
  • Oversees technical staff, consultants and outside service providers charged with updating, operating and maintaining EJN’s digital media sites;
  • Work with other Internews/EJN staff and local partners to oversee the design, management and flow of content, particularly online;
  • Manage specified projects within the EJN portfolio;
  • Assist the Executive Director of Environmental Programs to manage EJN programs, fundraising and development;
  • Work with Internews staff to devise and follow through on development strategies that will help generate government and private donor support for Internews’ environmental programs, including drafting, preparing and editing reports and proposals;
  • Represent Internews’ environmental programs at key conferences and events, including with funders and policy experts;
  • Develop, write, present and distribute reporting toolkits and other background and briefing materials related to environmental journalism;
  • Serve as an environmental journalism trainer, particularly but not exclusively in the field of data visualization and GeoJournalism;
  • Carry out research as assigned and in support of ongoing projects and new initiatives;
  • Complete program expense reporting in a timely and detailed manner;
  • Provide administrative, logistical and management support for EJN projects, as needed;

Qualifications

Required

  • Prior experience working on environmental issues and/or in the field of media, preferably as a journalist
  • Experience with digital media technologies, especially data visualization, geospatial analysis and content management
  • Strong project management skills: at least 3-5 years project management or development experience, including field experience, OR a relevant advanced degree
  • Superior analytical skills and writing ability for data analysis and writing narrative reports
  • Willingness and ability to work remotely with colleagues around the world, including a willingness to occasionally communicate and work during non-standard business hours
  • Fluency in English and strong oral communication and presentation skills
  • Experience with report and proposal writing
  • Experience with MS Excel and Word
  • Proven organization skills, with attention to detail
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize with a shifting workload
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in a multicultural environment
  • Relevant university degree
  • Eligibility to work in either the US, EU, or Thailand

Preferred

  • Foreign language skills
  • Experience arranging logistics for project implementation abroad
  • Experience preparing expense reports and budgets
