Position description

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity.  Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.


The iDeas Lab, the award-winning creative and digital production department at CSIS, seeks a highly motivated and creative self-starter to join our dynamic and fast-paced environment as a Multimedia Producer starting December 2017.

The iDeas Lab enhances CSIS's policy research and analysis with the latest in cutting-edge web technologies, design, and video. (You can see some of our latest at The multimedia producer will work closely with the department on creative projects that tell compelling public policy stories, partnering with some of the most respected foreign policy experts and researchers. This is an ideal opportunity for visual storytellers who are eager to bring complex policy issues to life across multiple platforms.

The successful candidate will oversee a quarterly project developed as part of a practicum in modern journalism. The tailored program will host groups of graduate students at CSIS’s Washington headquarters four times per year. The program culminates in the creation of a standalone multimedia project on international affairs. The multimedia producer will also mentor students and develop and maintain an ongoing website that will host the completed project content.

The multimedia producer will also work with our experts on other digital projects, including long-form media-rich storytelling, interactive data visualizations, motion graphics, and video.



  • Oversee multimedia projects, mentor students, and manage website for the practicum in modern journalism
  • Work closely with research programs and department staff to develop multimedia projects to suit stated goals and needs
  • Lead and develop video projects, including assist with scripting, filming, editing, developing visual assets, and all other aspects of production for motion design and narrative storytelling
  • Develop media-rich longform digital reports, single-page applications, or websites, including developing ideas, content management, data visualizations, and other interactive features
  • Other duties and projects as needed

Required Experience


  • B.A./B.S/A.B in relevant field
  • Minimum three years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge and experience in applicable software and computer applications
  • Some background in journalism preferred
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; including effectively presenting information to non-technical partners, operating in a fast-paced environment and managing competing priorities
  • Strong interest in global affairs and public policy
  • Sound judgement, maturity, and discretion
  • Strong attention to detail, initiative, and follow through skills


  • Adobe Creative Suite for design, motion, and video
  • Front-end data visualization using JavaScript (D3 and Highcharts, especially)
  • Open-source content management systems (WordPress, Drupal, Jekyll)
  • GitHub

You don’t need to be proficient in all of these, but you should know a section of them, and be able to learn others.
