Global context: The field of citizen-led peacebuilding and conflict transformation is approaching an historic inflection point. The systems established by governments after World War II to prevent war and advance human development are straining to meet the challenges of the modern world in which intra-state fragility and conflict can be as destabilizing as inter-state war and where major challenges can only be addressed through cooperation across governments, the private sector, and citizens. Demand for creative and collaborative approaches that can align and mobilize diverse stakeholders toward shared goals is at an historic high. At the same time, the funding sources that have fueled the growth of the citizen-led peacebuilding field over the past four decades - governmental and multi-lateral donor agencies - are under greater scrutiny and more pressure to deliver than ever before.
Organizational Context: For 35 years Search for Common Ground (Search) has been a pioneer in the field of citizen-led peacebuilding and conflict transformation. Combining insights from the fields of social entrepreneurship and conflict resolution, Search has developed a methodology that transforms conflict into cooperation, supporting societies in more than 50 countries to reduce violence, recover from its effects, and work collaboratively to build healthier, safer and more sustainable communities. This track record, combined with a new generation of organizational leadership at the executive and Board level, have positioned Search to meet this increasing demand through dynamic growth and development in the coming years.
Our Strategic Aspirations
Search has established a three-scope strategy to build on lessons learned over our first 35 years while adapting to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future:
Scope 1: Adapting our program portfolio over the coming 5 years so that we are positioned to apply our proven methodology to the most damaging and consequential conflicts; to define our engagement in those conflicts by the boundaries of each conflict rather than the boundaries of individual nation-states; and to orient programming toward the goal of effecting enduring change that is not reliant upon externally-funded third-party engagement.
Scope 2: Catalyzing and shaping the emergence of a peacebuilding movement through the establishment of strategic scale partnerships inside and outside the peacebuilding field; supporting youth-led activism; and pioneering technology-enabled approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding.
Scope 3: Pursuing advocacy to inform policy-making through lessons learned from front-line peacebuilding and advancing outreach to increase public awareness of, engagement in, and support to citizen-led peacebuilding.
We are searching for…
- The Executive Director, Search for Common Ground - Belgium manages operations out of the Brussels office ensuring effective daily backstopping, communication, and coordination between Brussels-hired staff and relevant global support functions, regional teams, and country offices. S/he oversees the maintenance and building of relations with European Union, European Commission, and bi-lateral European government officials and departments relevant to the organization’s mission, leveraging and coordinating the availability of senior program and executive leadership to advance strategic outreach, advocacy, and fundraising goals. S/he supports the Strategic Development and Communications team’s efforts to build relations with private sector corporate, foundation, and individual partners and donors throughout Europe;
- As we pursue this strategy, the Executive Director, Search for Common Ground - Belgium will play a central leadership role in coordinating between programmatic, financial, and fundraising departments to maintain and strengthen the global organization’s partnerships and profile in Europe;
- This position will report to the President of Search for Common Ground as well as to the Board of Directors of Search for Common Ground - Brussels and work closely with Search’s Senior Management, Regional and Country Program Directors, and the divisions of Global Affairs and Partnerships, Strategic Development, Communications, and Operations.
Leadership and Management
- Provide effective leadership, coaching, and management to Brussels-hired staff, nurturing a supportive atmosphere, strong team-work, and a culture of accountability in an environment in which the direct-line supervisors for most staff are located elsewhere;
- Ensure the sound management of Search for Common Ground - Belgium and its operations and seek efficiencies in terms of field-HQ coordination and information-flow and in the structuring and management of this office’s operating budget;
- Work with the Global Finance to ensure effective financial oversight and audit-management for the belgian entity.
External Relations & Partnership Development
- Maintain and build relations with Search for Common Ground’s primary donor-partners in Europe - including the foreign ministries and development agencies of the European Union and European Commision, the Netherlands, Sweden, the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, and others - cultivating deeper strategic partnerships where relevant to advance the organization’s strategic goals;
- Work with the Government Affairs and Partnerships team and the Global Programs leadership to develop and advance annual fundraising and advocacy strategies, including strategizing and coordinating visits of program and executive leadership to Brussels and other European capitals for partnership-development, outreach, advocacy, and fundraising; and overseeing the 7. European Affairs and Partnerships Team in close coordination with the Director of Global Affairs and Partnerships;
- Provide external representation with peer organizations in the field of peacebuilding and other relevant communities.
As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key responsibilities.
You meet the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred in International Relations, Development Studies or a related area;
- Minimum 7 years of fundraising and business development experience with relevant European donors for a similar international organization;
- Proven successful experience in developing new business for multiyear program funding;
- Experience managing and leading teams in a matrix organizational structure;
- Experience managing EU grants and liaising with grant officers;
- Strong knowledge of institutions, dynamics, and thematic priorities in the international development or humanitarian sectors across the EU and larger European continent;
- Existing network of key figures within EU and individual European Member State policy and development institutions;
- Experience working collaboratively with a broad range of stakeholders, local government, officials, and international donors;
- Spoken and written fluency in English and French;
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally;
- Highly organized and efficient to manage large portfolios;
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills;
- Experience in managing program activity consistent with the Search’s work at ‘in-country’, regional, and global levels is a plus.
- Dynamic and flexible self-starter with entrepreneurial spirit, with a desire to be part of a growing international organization;
- Ability to manage political and social pressures to make important and sound decisions;
- Sufficiently experienced to command the respect of current leadership and external peers and partners;
- An excellent team-builder and manager of people;
- Ability to demonstrate managerial courage and decision making;
- Resourceful and able to find cost-effective creative solutions to address complex challenges and strengthen the organization’s operational capacity;
- Ability to value and consider the perspectives of all parties and to work across diverse cultures;
- Ability to integrate Search vision, mission and core values, integrity and accountability throughout all organizational and business practices and lead by example;
- Experience and familiarity with the international peacebuilding field a plus.
