The Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia SIPA seeks a Senior Research Scholar to conduct work on international energy and climate change topics. The position will report to the Director of the Center. Successful execution will require generating original research, project management and communicating research findings to a range of audiences in a manner that maximizes policy impact, as well as contributing to the Center's wider research and convening efforts.
The future of the international energy and climate change landscape is strongly linked to considerations around geopolitics, energy security, technology, and U.S foreign and domestic policy. The research will leverage linkages between areas of ongoing work in sustainability, natural gas, renewable energy, energy finance, and energy security at the Center, SIPA and Columbia University.
The position will engage at a high level with key stakeholders; a high level of verbal and written communications, and cultural awareness, skills are required.
Research and Analysis
Identify and execute on priority areas of work and appropriate research methodologies for qualitative and quantitative analysis on both a global and regional scale. Key regions are likely to include, among others: Russia/Eurasia, India, Latin America, Middle East.
Research tasks will include, but are not limited to, expert interviews, literature reviews, quantitative analysis, and policy analysis, as well as writing up research results and drafting reports and other documents
Regularly publish outputs that provide quantitative and qualitative analysis on the above areas. These will take the form of research reports, commentary, op-eds, and other outputs.
Management, Coordination and Leadership
Support the strategic vision of the work and scope of research questions to explore, including identifying emerging opportunities and challenges, and develop ways in which the Center can generate unique insights to improve public understanding and debate.
Help identify the institutions and individuals currently doing leading work in this area and establish and maintain close working relationships with them to explore and develop research partnerships and joint products.
Assist in development efforts to secure funding from a variety of sources to support thematic work.
Leverage the resources available across Columbia University to ensure the work stream is cross-disciplinary and engages faculty and students from all relevant disciplines.
Convene and Communicate
Clearly communicate research findings into actionable, policy-relevant mediums for multiple audiences [e.g. policymakers, private and public sector leaders, general public]. Must possess the ability to convey complex data and information in a succinct and easy to digest manner for immediate impact.
Staff high-level roundtables to incorporate expert review from a broad range of perspectives into the research process and Chatham House rule summaries.
Minimum Degree Required:Master's degree or equivalent.
All applicants MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered for the position.
Master's Degree in economics, business administration, public policy, international relations, political science, energy policy or a related field.
15+ years of work experience in global energy markets, analysis, and/or policy with 5+ years in a managerial or leadership role.
Experience in policy analysis, development or advisory services and execution of economic and policy research.
Extensive knowledge of energy economics, international relations, public policy processes, related institutional arrangements, and the substantive policy issues.
A proven record of conducting relations at the staff level and the ability to support consensus and interact effectively with multiple stakeholders across levels of seniority.
Strong communication skills; the ability to build support across partners for better policies, on the basis of evidence-based analysis. Preferred Qualifications:20+ years of work experience in economic and energy markets, analysis, and policy with 10+ years in a managerial or leadership role.
Knowledge of and ability to operate professionally in one or more relevant foreign languages (Arabic, French, Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, other).
