Job overview/summary: NRGI’s communications team plays a central role in advancing our mission by increasing awareness and understanding of the critical challenges associated with and potential solutions for improving natural resource governance; raising NRGI’s profile as a source of expertise and experience and a generator of data and evidence about natural resource governance to respond to these challenges; and influencing policy making and augmenting policy dialogue. NRGI tailors its communications work to a broad range of audiences, including but not limited to: the citizens, government officials, civil society actors, journalists and parliamentarians with whom we work, global advocacy targets and partner organizations, including donors.
NRGI seeks a communications officer (or senior communications officer, depending on the experience of the successful candidate) to provide input to and support the execution of NRGI’s communications strategy. The successful candidate will report to NRGI’s London-based communications director, and work in tandem with NRGI’s existing New York-based communications officer as well as NRGI staff in the organization’s many countries of operation. This is an exciting opportunity to join this growing team and to contribute ideas, energy and initiative to our expanding communications ambitions.
Major responsibilities: Given the collaborative nature of the communications team and the varied demands from the organization, and in the interest of maximizing the capacities of the successful candidate, the precise responsibilities are to be determined based on the profile of the hire. The following details the responsibilities of the communications team as a whole, which are executed in concert under the Communications Director. The successful hire would contribute to advancing these responsibilities.
Communications strategy design and implementation
- Enhance and implement our dynamic, innovative communications strategy that prioritizes ways in which communications can support and advance NRGI’s strategy.
- Engage in external outreach and establish partnerships with other organizations to expand and leverage communications networks and to leverage best practices in communications across related fields.
- Advise the leadership team, regional and country teams on communications strategies and approaches to advance their work, with emphasis on select products and events and provide training on communications to staff as appropriate. Also advise all staff (including human resources) on branding and reputational issues, supporting staff engagement with, for example, recruiting platforms and communities of practice.
- Advance key performance metrics for the communications team, including but not limited to expanding our media outreach, driving traffic to our website and social media and adapting our strategy to seize new opportunities.
Promoting NRGI’s work
- Explain and promote NRGI’s work to a diverse set of external audiences and through a variety of different mediums, including photography, written content and visualizations.
- Contribute to NRGI’s storytelling efforts, documenting the organization’s successes in written and multimedia forms and innovating new methods for presenting narratives.
- Facilitate outreach to international media, handling inbound media requests and proactively pitching NRGI work and experts.
- Place NRGI-authored content (e.g., op-eds and blog posts) with media and partners’ communications channels, and brainstorming ways in which to augment that profile.
- Monitor media coverage of NRGI and its staff and adjusts approaches as needed.
- Collaborate with program and regional teams on the development and promotion of events and key products, particularly in NRGI’s priority countries.
- Define, protect and promote NRGI’s brand.
Developing and delivering content
- Design and implement a “digital first” revamp of NRGI’s communication, including NRGI’s website and social media.
- Ensure timely, accurate and exciting content that drives traffic and boosts NRGI’s following.
- Gather quantitative and qualitative content from teams for dissemination across multiple media (print, website, Facebook, video, audio, still imagery).
- Edit public-facing NRGI content, including publications, and manage consultants to provide support on editorial work (e.g., copy editors, document designers).
- Create and update dynamic organizational materials, including presentations and brochures that describe NRGI.
- Provide ancillary support for team-generated content such as speeches, presentations, curricula, etc.
- Facilitate work between teams and external vendors including branding, layout, web development, translation, and printing firms; and creative professionals such as photographers and videographers.

Demonstrated Knowledge and Experience
- Full-time experience as a communications professional in an NGO, think tank or multilateral organization essential; five years minimum. Some portion (but not all) of this time may be substituted with time spent in journalism (covering economics, politics, development or foreign affairs).
- Experience devising digital communications strategies and modalities, managing web developers and content managers, creating/monitoring digital dashboards and analytics, and managing social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, YouTube) in a professional capacity. Experience with online data visualization an advantage.
- Experience with both proactive and reactive media relations.
- Experience supporting the communications needs of programmatic teams based in developing countries, either in-person or remotely.
- Demonstrable expertise writing and editing policy or advocacy-related text, both short- and long-form.
- Experience with MailChimp, Adobe design suite, Google analytics preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Perfect fluency in English. Fluency in French, Arabic or Spanish a significant advantage.
- Ability to operate in a challenging, fast paced environment, juggling competing demands.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate and engage with staff from a variety of background and at various levels of seniority.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Word; moderate proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint
- Bachelors-level degree essential. Postgraduate degree in economics, international relations, international development or journalism strongly preferred.
