Position description

The Communications Officer will support the communications unit to reach RCEU’s visibility and advocacy objectives by contributing to public positioning and messaging, editing and producing communications materials for dissemination to specific audiences across different platforms, and responding to stakeholders’ communications and media requests. The communications unit also manages the public relations and communications aspects of RCEU events, as well as assuring accurate and timely reporting to members, and advising them on communications issues vis-à-vis the EU as policy-maker, partner and donor.

With guidance from the Senior Communications Officer and in collaboration with members and RCEU thematic units (Asylum & Migration, Development Cooperation, Disaster Management, and Social Inclusion), the Communications Officer will partake in the overall planning, development, delivery and monitoring of RCEU external and internal communications. This role is primarily editorial and has a strong focus on digital platforms (website and social media).

Key responsibilities

  • Ensure quality control, copy-editing/proof reading and design of RCEU internal and external communications and publications;
  • Create and upload content for the RCEU website based on Red Cross positions and contributions to EU policies and actions, sources from RCEU members, or self-generated news;
  • Draft and source web and social media materials to increase the visibility of RCEU members’ activities in the field;
  • Oversee and cultivate systematic information-sharing with members via the RCEU intranet in consultation with RCEU units;
  • Maintain a dynamic social media presence and develop RCEU's social media advocacy and communications efforts;
  • Monitor and analyse RCEU’s digital communications, generating regular analytics reports;
  • Support the public-relations and communications aspects of key RCEU external events.



  • University degree in journalism, communications, EU affairs, international relations, or similar.


  • At least 2 years’ professional experience in communications, journalism, or a related field;
  • Experience in writing for web, as well as developing and updating websites;
  • Demonstrated community management and use of social media for advocacy purposes;
  • Experience/knowledge of the work and policy processes of the EU institutions - preferred;
  • Experience with the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, a membership office, or another civil society organisation – preferred;
  • Interest in advocacy and in promoting the rights and needs of vulnerable people and communities.


  • Excellent written English, editing and proof reading skills; able to translate complex information into clear and accessible messages;
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills; can work independently, but also as part of a multinational team;
  • Good time-management and organisational skills; able to coordinate different projects and meet tight deadlines;
  • Strong PC skills (Office, Online tools, Content Management Systems);
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop and InDesign) – preferred.


  • Native-level written and spoken English;
  • Other EU languages - preferred.

Terms and Conditions

  • Two years fixed-term contract; subject to Belgian social security and taxes;

  • Full time position of 38 hours per week;

  • The monthly gross salary ranges between EUR 2,700 and EUR 2,800. We also offer an attractive compensation and benefits package.
