Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). OROLSI at the UN Headquarters brings together the Police Division, the Criminal Law and Judicial Advisory Service (CLJAS), the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section (DDR) and the Security Sector Reform Unit (SSR). The overarching goal of this Office is to support the work of UN missions to help national authorities consolidate lasting peace by establishing justice and security systems.
Under the overall supervision of the Senior Political Affairs Officer, the Intern for Political Affairs will assist the Senior Officer on special projects:
• Liaise with relevant entities of the Department. These projects include thematic areas such as Sustaining Peace and the Prevention of Violent Extremism;
• Coordinate the internal and external meetings with stakeholders;
• Assist in the preparation of briefing notes, talking points and memorandum for the senior leadership;
• Assist in producing materials communicating the mandate and activities of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) to clients and reporting to interested parties and legislative bodies;
• Perform any other duties as requested.

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
Field of study to be preferably in political science, history, international relations, law or a related field;
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Exposure related to in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area would be an asset.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship position fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is an advantage.

The duration of the internship is for three (3) months with a possibility of extension. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.
