Position description

In addition to the regular duties of a Program Officer, the Vice President for PED External Relations provides support to the division by tracking legislative and U. S. Government activity that affects international exchange programs, engages staff in educational outreach, and serves as Meridian’s representative on various coalitions of interest.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conduct policy research, monitor legislation, and track Congressional and USG activity that affects PED
  • Help develop Meridian’s legislative strategy, and advise on Congressional outreach
  • Mobilize and educate staff on how to effectively engage Congressional and USG leadership and to advocate for robust budgets and policies for international exchange programs 
  • Oversee staff’s educational outreach to Capitol Hill
  • Represent Meridian on various coalitions of interest such as the Alliance for International Exchange, the State Department, Global Ties U.S. or other organizations as needed

Qualifications

Experience/Education

  • Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree desirable 
  • Ten years of experience with international exchange programs
  • Thorough knowledge and proven experience managing IVLP projects
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of American politics and government
  • Familiarization with the U.S. Congressional budgetary and legislative processes
  • Strong communication, conceptual, organizational and writing skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects under deadline

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to handle extra responsibility in addition to regular duties as an IVLP Program Officer
  • Understanding of Meridian’s broader objectives, programs and divisions
  • Tact, patience and flexibility in working with colleagues

    Excellent verbal and written command of the English language

  • Interest in working with an international not-for-profit professional exchange organization
