Position description

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decisionmakers concerned with global security and prosperity.  Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

 

JOB SUMMARY:

CSIS is seeking a Program Coordinator and Research Assistant to join the Human Rights Initiative (HRI). The Program Coordinator and Research Assistant is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of HRI including budget management, outreach, event planning, research support, writing, and administrative support. The role will involve supporting HRI’s research and projects, including addressing closing space for civil society, ensuring protection and rights for vulnerable populations, and addressing the security – human rights nexus, as well as other core duties as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative (60%):

  • Maintains the HRI’s calendar, correspondence, and travel itineraries
  • Assists with maintaining financial oversight of the HRI through budget preparation, analysis and review
  • Assists in preparation of fundraising proposals and reports to donors
  • Coordinates event logistics for meetings, conferences, seminars, and briefings (including where relevant arranging food, AV, webcasting)
  • Drafts and edits external correspondence and communications
  • Manages the publication process for all HRI reports
  • Acts as the primary liaison for internal programs
  • Assists with outreach activities and contacts management
  • Updates web and social media content
  • Hires and supervises interns for HRI
  • Drafts contracts and manages expenses including payment to consultants/associates

 

Research (40%):

  • Conducts topical and regional research in support of HRI publications and briefings
  • Drafts and edits commentaries and reports
  • Incorporate new research ideas into program design
  • Provide substantive guidance to HRI’s network of experts during the publication drafting and editing process

 

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • B.A. in International Relations, Political Science, or related field required, and further education welcomed;
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of professional experience required (internships not applicable);
  • Demonstrated interest in human rights, potentially including civil society and business and human rights; 
  • Program management, budget, and event planning experience required;
  • Ideally possess strong social media skills and knowledge or interest in innovation;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail essential;
  • Superior writing and analytical skills;
  • Ability to operate under pressure and in a fast-paced environment;
  • Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public;
  • Candidates should possess sense of humor, sound judgment, impeccable integrity, positive attitude and creativity; and
  • Ability to operate independently and with team members.

 

Qualifications
