Position description

The position will facilitate community development, student engagement and support all residential and co-curricular components for summer programs organized through Summerfuel at Tufts and in collaboration with Tufts University pre college summer programs.  These programs include:

  • Summerfuel Pre College program (PC); Summerfuel College Admissions Edge (CAE); Summerfuel Boston Consulting Group program (BCG)
  • Tufts University’s The College Experience program (TCE)
  • Tufts University’s International Relations program (IR)
  • Tufts University’s Leaders for Social Change program (LSC)

The Resident Advisor serves on the residential staff team for Summerfuel at Tufts.  The Resident Advisor’s primary role is to spend the summer living on campus, working as a mentor to high school students from the United States and abroad. All RA staff are responsible for the safety and well-being of their students while living in the residence hall, at campus events, during meals, while serving on call, traveling off campus and on excursions they chaperone throughout New England.  Summerfuel Tufts is an opportunity for high school students to explore academically and grow socially. The program structure balances enriching academic coursework with exciting extracurricular activities and excursions. Each day is designed to encourage learning and exploration through a combination of guided coursework and activities, and the freedom to explore independently. 

Reports to: A Head of House (HoH) at Summerfuel at Tufts

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision, Coaching and Development

  • Supervise, mentor, guide, support, and coach high school students from the United States and abroad
  • Assist with implementation of student orientation sessions for new students
  • Participate in pre-program program set-up and closing needs
  • Assist with the needs of all opening and closing days for each summer program
  • Support daily residence hall operations to establish a comfortable, healthy, positive living environment
  • Recruit students to get involved with campus activities, events, workshops and excursions
  • Educate students regarding university, community and online communication guidelines
  • Oversee student use of campus facilities such as the dining hall, Rec Center, sports fields/courts, auditoriums, multipurpose rooms
  • Conduct town patrol in Davis Square with other RA staff to provide resource support for students while they explore healthy off campus options
  • Other duties as assigned by the HoH and/or the Executive Leadership Team

Administration

  • Review excursion itineraries and standard operating procedures with students prior to going on college visits, evening/weekend trips
  • Chaperone program-specific excursions throughout the week and on weekends
  • Assist with the implementation of the master Events Calendar for specific programs
  • Monitor equipment and supplies needed for co-curricular programming, athletics, crafts, etc..
  • Complete all incident/behavioral reports, building maintenance concerns and make referrals to Head of House regarding any student concerns
  • Take photographs of Summerfuel students for end of program slideshow, blog and nightly Insider
  • Design door tags for student residents living in the residence hall using the Summerfuel theme as designated by the Executive Leadership team
  • Design and update bulletin boards in the residence hall with educational and important collegiate resource information
  • Conduct open office hours in the Summerfuel Central Office in a rotating staff schedule fielding general student inquiries and provide resources

Leadership, Advisement and Student Safety & Well-being

  • Develop a positive, engaging and safe community conducive to healthy social interactions and academic enhancement
  • Conduct residential building safety and condition walk throughs
  • Conduct nightly check-in (curfew) for students, debrief how their day went and implement Quiet Hours
  • Refer students to Head of House staff regarding any behavioral/adjustment/healthcare/academic concerns
  • Foster a positive sense of community pride and campus spirit
  • Lead afternoon activities (DIY crafts, sporting events, cultural workshops, tutoring sessions, etc…) and celebrate student summer birthdays
  • Serve in evening on-call rotational schedule with other RA staff
  • Organize weekly Wednesday Community Night with group of students (includes review of floor meeting agenda, dinner, social activity)
  • Attend and engage at all required staff meetings and training sessions

Qualifications

The successful candidate must be 21, have at least 3 years of college student leadership experience and be a fun, mature, approachable, reliable, positive team player.  Ideal candidates will have demonstrated leadership experience within a residential college campus or summer camp environment, event planning and volunteer/group supervision.

The Resident Advisor must:

  • Communicate effectively orally, in writing, one on one, small groups and large groups
  • Maintain a positive, loyal, working attitude and enthusiastic value for teamwork
  • Be flexible and willing to work long hours in an intensive, but fun residential environment
  • Demonstrate effective leadership, time management, organizational, group facilitation and critical thinking skills
  • Serve as a mature role model academically, professionally and through social media

Salary:  generous salary, plus full room, board and $250 travel stipend.
