Position description

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) intends to hire a full-time Executive Director based in Washington DC. The IISS is headquartered in London and, in addition to Washington, has regional offices in Singapore and Bahrain. The selected candidate will report to the Director-General and the Deputy Director-General and will provide support in global responsibilities, managing operations, as well as leading fundraising and income diversification activities in the region.

The IISS is the world’s leading authority on international conflict and geopolitical trends. It is international in its composition, perspective and reach. The Institute provides objective facts and independent analysis for its core audiences in government, the private sector, and the expert and opinion-forming communities. Summits convened by the IISS facilitate intergovernmental consultations, while its research helps companies to understand political risk and its publications shape the international strategic debate. The Executive Director will play a vital role in strengthening the Institute’s international impact.

The Executive Director’s principle responsibilities will include:

  • Recruiting and retaining a team of outstanding researchers;
  • Providing expertise across the full range of defence policy issues;
  • Direction and management of the IISS–Americas’ operations, including liaising with individuals and corporate members in the US, and managing conference and events;
  • Developing new strategic partnerships with the private sector, and leading and coordinating research and briefing services for major companies;
  • Fundraising for the IISS–Americas office and for general corporate programmes;
  • Contributing to IISS publications and journals;
  • Assisting the Director-General and the Deputy Director-General in widening and deepening IISS relationships with governments around the world;
  • Supporting the Director-General and the Deputy Director-General in the general management and development of the IISS;
  • Having a vision for developing the IISS–Americas office into a major voice across the spectrum of defence activity, and a plan for achieving that vision.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter, an effective communicator with strong people management skills, and able to take on a wide variety of tasks. The position will suit a person with strong intellectual qualifications, an international outlook and an established record of accomplishment in government, the think tank community and/or business. The Executive Director will be expected to travel frequently to the international offices and to IISS events worldwide.

The post will be available from January 2019. Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience, and will attract a pension and private medical benefits package.
