The Research Analyst will also provide key regional and thematic expertise to FH’s research products, in addition to developing and coordinating a wide network of local researchers.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Develop a network of regional and thematic experts to serve as new contributors, and act as primary point of contact with external consultants based around the world, liaising by secure means when necessary
  • Coordinate research process and logistics for the Americas and Europe regions for the annual Freedom on the Net and Freedom in the World reports
  • Perform substantive fact-checking, editing, rewriting, and proofreading of reports on internet freedom, many authored by non-native English speakers. In the process of editing, supplement the reports with own research
  • Systematically track democracy and internet freedom developments in Latin America, Western Europe, the United States, and Canada
  • Strengthen regional and thematic expertise within FH, contribute analysis to Freedom on the Net, Freedom in the World, and other FH reports as needed, and provide substantive input at internal and external meetings
  • Contribute original analysis and commentary on democracy and internet freedom issues through articles written for FH blog or external publication
  • Work closely with other members of the Research and Analysis team to ensure that all research outputs adhere to the highest standards of quality and analytical integrity
  • Where funding permits, travel to the Latin America region to convene review meetings with local researchers and to relevant international conferences to represent FH research
  • Serve as a spokesperson to the media and external interlocutors on developments related to designated regions
  • Draft talking points and briefing notes for senior staff
  • Analyze data and prepare charts, graphics, and other support materials for publication
  • Help with logistical preparations for domestic and international events
  • Assist with funding proposals, donor reports, and monitoring and evaluation of the project’s impact
  • Ensure consultant contracts, payment requests, business expense reports and other financial documents are in line with FH requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, human rights, international law, or related field; Master’s degree or other advanced degree is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 3-4 years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of advanced education and experience
  • Professional spoken and written fluency in Spanish; additional French, German, and/or Portuguese language skills a plus
  • Outstanding English writing and editing skills and a knack for drafting concise, eloquent communications
  • Intellectual curiosity for the political, legal, and human rights debates surrounding democracy and the internet
  • Strong knowledge of the political dynamics of Latin America, Western Europe, the United States, and Canada, with a demonstrated background in human rights, democracy, and internet freedom issues
  • Superb attention to detail and an ability to produce error-free work on tight deadlines
  • Fluency with MS Word to mark up and reformat documents, and with Excel to analyze data and create graphics
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, finding solutions to problems as they arise and taking responsibility for your work
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and an ability to facilitate cooperation between people with divergent views and from different cultural backgrounds
  • Some experience with donor reporting, monitoring & evaluation, and financial reconciliations
