Position description

The Investment Operations Department (INO) of IDB Invest is responsible for generating a portfolio of high quality, creditworthy, and environmentally and socially sound projects that result in significant development impact. The business cycle goes from the identification, selection, origination and execution of transactions to their monitoring. INO follows a matrix model, with three Segment Divisions covering Infrastructure and Energy, Financial Institutions and Corporates, and three transversal areas such as the Financial Products and Services Division (in charge of capital market solutions, equity and mezzanine and trade and supply chain finance), the Advisory Services and Blended Finance Team, and the Portfolio Management Division. 
The team’s mission: 
Under the Investment Operations Department (INO) of IDB Invest, the Financial Intermediaries Division (INO/FLI) is responsible for originating, structuring and closing development finance transactions (loans, guarantees, equity) in with financial institutions in LAC.
The Intern will join FLI and will report to the Division Chief of INO/FLI or his delegate. The Intern will coordinate with other organizational units of the IDB and IDB Invest as necessary and will support the new business developing opportunities and support existing clients along the full project life-cycle (evaluating, structuring, negotiating, and closing and disbursing new transactions).
What you’ll do:  

  • Assist with project feasibility assessment for lending and investment projects. This entails conducting research relative to prospective project sponsors, gathering and developing relevant market and financial data, and assisting with the preparation of operations summaries and preliminary desk evaluations of potential projects.

  • Review and analyze financial statements and develop and/or adapt financial projection models in Excel to evaluate financial information and support management decision-making.

  • Assist with the development of detailed post-appraisal project reports related to lending and equity investment projects. This includes compiling data, conducting analyses, and preparing reports related to capital cost, financing plan, financial projections, legal considerations, credit risk issues and mitigations, development impact assessments and other key issues.

  • Assist with financial closings and disbursements for approved lending and investment projects by assisting with the verification that project sponsors comply with all contractual conditions.

  • Assist in the preparation of PowerPoint presentations and information memoranda for investment projects.

  • Other activities, as agreed with the internship supervisor.


What you’ll need:  

  • Education: A current graduate student in economics, international development, public and/or international affairs, finance, business administration, engineering or another relevant field. 

  • Languages: be proficient in English and preferably with a working knowledge of one of the Corporation’s additional official languages (e.g. Spanish, Portuguese, or French.)

  • Soft Skills: Team player, inclusive, innovative and creative, client-focus, results-driven, with strong communication skills. Ability to synthetize information.

  • Technical Skills: Deep Excel and Power Point knowledge.

Internship Program Requirements: 
To be part of our Internship Program you will need to comply with all of the following requirements: 


  • Be first-time participant in an Internship Program held by the IDB Invest (also known as “Corporation”) or IDB (also known as the “Bank”)

  • For the graduate category, be between 21 and 33 years of age as of the starting date of the internship and be enrolled in an accredited university as a graduate student. Graduation date cannot be prior to August 15th of 2019;

  • Not be former staff member, Complementary Workforce (“CW”), contractors for the Corporation or the Bank or have previously provided services to the Corporation or the Bank through a contractor or under any other contractual modality; and

  • Not be a relative*, including spouses, of an active Corporation or Bank staff member or individual with a CW contract within and including the fourth degree of consanguinity and the second degree of affinity.

Candidates with more than 3 applications in the 2019 Summer Internship Program for IDB, IDB Lab, and IDB Invest will be automatically disqualified.
