Position description

The Middle East Institute (MEI) seeks a full-time associate editor for its peer-reviewed academic publication, The Middle East Journal (MEJ).

 

A key member of MEI’s Publications Department, the associate editor’s duties include editing/proofreading, assisting with MEJ’s social initiatives, designing layout, and supervising a team of interns. This position will also be the main point of contact for subscribers and members who receive MEJ, and will be responsible for maintaining the database of subscriber records, processing and mailing claims, and other duties. In addition, the associate editor will manage the peer review process under the supervision of the editor. The candidate will primarily report to the editor of the MEJ.

Qualifications

Responsiblities:

  • Work with the editor to substantively edit and copy-edit five articles for each of the four issues per year;
  • Compile, send, and adjudicate edits for one or more journal articles per issue;
  • Track submissions and manuscripts sent out for peer review and keep records up to date;
  • Assist the editor with finding reviewers for selected manuscripts;
  • Manage MEJ’s email account, answering queries as necessary; and
  • Provide logistical support for and plan MEJ’s events.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree with related professional experience. 

Strong writing ability, editing/proofreading experience, and attention to detail are essential. Candidates must also be creative problem solvers with the ability to multi-task, work with minimal supervision at times, and organize and manage others as needed. Familiarity with online content production and Word/Excel are strongly preferred, and Arabic, Hebrew, and/or Persian language skills and knowledge of layout software (Adobe InDesign) would be a plus.
