The Communications team is seeking a Communications Officer based in NY or Latin America. The Office of Communications plays a central role in the work of the Open Society Foundations by coordinating and strengthening the public presence of the global network and by helping to advance relevant issues.

Job Profile

The Communications officer for Latin America & the Caribbean will report to the lead Communications officer of the Open Society Foundations, working in close collaboration with the global Communications team. The primary purpose of the position is to help devise and implement effective media, communications, and publications strategies that advance Open Society goals in Latin America & the Caribbean.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
  • Work with program staff to develop and disseminate an overall communications strategy for the region as well as individual issue/program strategies and key messages for advancing our work in prioritized areas.
  • Assist program staff in creating appropriate public-facing material for their needs, ranging from text-based reports, briefing papers and fact sheets (both digital and print), to coordinating and managing the production of videos and other material.
  • Work with Communications staff to manage external producers, photographers and designers as required.
  • Successfully pitch stories in high profile media and promote content in social media
  • Identify and create media opportunities to promote Open Society, its work, priorities and grantees
  • Draft and edit news releases, media advisories, Op-Eds, digital posts and other content as assigned.
  • Organize news conferences and other events as required
  • Run organizational Twitter account or Facebook page around an issue area. Also produce and curate effective content around this region and its grantees via our website
  • Assist when required with identifying appropriate external consultants to support our efforts
  • Co-develop and conduct Communications training for Latin America Program staff and grantees
  • May provide coaching to senior leaders on media engagement

Candidate Profile:

  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in a communications role, preferably related to Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Comprehensive, specialized knowledge in communications and media including knowledge of ongoing current controversies/issues and leading figures/thinking
  • Strong writing and editing skills in English, Spanish, and Portuguese
  • Demonstrated practical experience in press outreach and digital communications; strong understanding of social media
  • Experience successfully pitching stories in high profile media
  • Substantial knowledge of organizational and project management
  • Ability to build and maintain strong, trusting internal relationships within team and across programs, departmental units, and levels
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work
