Girls Not Brides is seeking a Senior Gender Officer within our learning team in London to take forward our efforts to foster the uptake of evidence based solutions to ending child marriage that have gender equality at their heart.
Girls Not Brides is the only global partnership entirely focused on creating and sustaining a worldwide movement to end child marriage, and ensuring that this movement leads to tangible change for the girls at risk or affected by the practice. We are a network of more than 1,200 civil society organisations in over 100 countries, all committed to working in partnership to end child marriage. Our vision is a world without child marriage where girls and women enjoy equal status with boys and men, and are able to achieve their full potential in all aspects of their lives.
Our members are diverse. They vary in size, location, and the type of work they do. They include groups focused on research and advocacy as well as programme implementers and service providers working directly in their communities. Our members address the issue of child marriage from various perspectives, including health, women’s and girls’ rights, child protection, education, economic empowerment and general development.
The global partnership is supported by the Girls Not Brides secretariat with teams in UK (London), Mexico, Kenya and India. The secretariat coordinates and supports the activities of the Global Partnership in line with our 2017-2020 strategy, which was developed in consultation with 500 members and partners.
This role sits within the learning team. The learning team builds an understanding of how child marriage happens, and what needs to be done to address it, by sharing the latest research and evidence about what works, identifying and building consensus about solutions needed, and using this to support the work of Girls Not Brides members and partners.
The job-holder will work closely with regional teams to identify and facilitate learning about gender transformative solutions to ending child marriage, and with the partnership team to support capacity strengthening of Girls Not Brides members and national partnerships in this area.
Based in the Girls Not Brides office in central London, the successful candidate will report to the Head of Learning and will have the following responsibilities:
Strengthen Girls Not Brides work promoting gender transformative approaches to end child marriage
- Strengthen the capacity, knowledge and positioning of the Girls Not Brides secretariat on gender transformative approaches.
- Design learning initiatives on gender transformative responses to end child marriage with Regional Teams.
- Drawing on the findings from the capacity development review and strategy (forthcoming), work across teams, particularly with Regional Teams and the Partnership Team to design capacity building initiatives in this area.
- Support the documentation and dissemination of effective approaches to tackle harmful gender norms and promote the empowerment of girls and women including those undertaken by Girls Not Brides
- Identify and develop tools and resources to support the Secretariat and members to include a strong gender lens in their work.
Facilitate learning about comprehensive responses to child marriage in priority countries
- Support Regional Teams to design initiatives to support stronger holistic responses to child marriage in priority countries which respond to root causes.
- Identify, create and take forward opportunities for disseminating evidence of what works to end child marriage including through in-country events.
Facilitate learning about approaches to end child marriage among Girls Not Bridesmembers
- Oversee the consolidation of evidence, tools and resources about solutions to end child marriage to support Girls Not Brides members in their work.
- Highlight learnings and evidence from other key online knowledge-sharing platforms which could help Girls Not Brides members to apply new learning to their work.
- Participate in external initiatives which can help to fill knowledge gaps on promising programmes and approaches.
- Lead the design and delivery of learning activities (such as webinars) in priority thematic areas.
Contribute to the overall work of the Learning team
- Represent the Learning Team internally and externally as required.
- Contribute to the direction of initiatives in the Learning Team.
- Oversee the design and budgeting of specific projects, and manage cross team initiatives.
- Participate in a capacity building task team across the secretariat to drive all related activities.
Contribute to the broader work of Girls Not Brides
- Provide input and advice on Girls Not Brides’ communications materials and serve as a resource on gender transformative solutions to addressing child marriage for Girls Not Brides staff and members.
- Commit to the mission and vision of Girls Not Brides, putting these at the forefront of all planning, work and actions.
- Uphold the core values of Girls Not Brides in all areas of work and interactions with colleagues, members, partners and other stakeholders.
- Comply with Girls Not Brides policies and processes, with particular note for safeguarding, the code of conduct and data protection.
- Ensure that internal databases and monitoring information are kept fully up-to-date.
- Commit to ongoing personal development and learning.
- Fulfil any other reasonable requests for the advancement of the Girls Not Brides.
We are looking for candidates with a proven track record of designing learning initiatives and capacity building opportunities for civil society organisations from a range of different contexts. Candidates must have a strong gender and development background, and experience in international development. We need someone with direct experience of programme development, capacity building and monitoring and evaluation. A strong understanding of dynamics on gender and development issues, and of child marriage, is desirable.
We are specifically looking for candidates who can:
- Design, implement and assess the impact of learning and capacity building initiatives for civil society organisations.
- Help strengthen the Girls Not Brides Secretariat to ensure a strong gender lens in its support to member organisations.
- Develop user-friendly, interactive learning resources which help to translate complex concepts into accessible language for member organisations to use in their work.
- Take strategic leadership and ownership of projects which will add value to Girls Not Brides members and the work of the Secretariat.
- Provide strong strategic thinking and problem solving skills, and can appraise options and adapt plans as required.
- Listen, distil issues and communicate well with diverse actors from different cultural contexts.
- Interpret, analyse and synthesise qualitative and quantitative data and evidence from different sources.
- Operate independently to a high level of impact and quality, while also remaining agile, flexible and collaborative within, and across, the Secretariat team.
- Use a wide range of software suites and project management tools, and is able and willing to learn new ones.
- Post-graduate qualification in a relevant area (such as public policy, development studies, international relations, human rights or gender issues) or proven experience in a related field.
- Significant relevant professional experience, including experience of designing and monitoring the impact of learning initiatives among non-governmental or civil society organisations, particularly in low- to middle income countries.
- Experience designing face-to-face and remote capacity development initiatives for organisations working on gender and development.
- Strong commitment to the aims and values of Girls Not Brides, including an understanding of approaches to empower girls and women, and to ensure gender equality.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Proficiency in the latest versions of all MS office suite, and use of databases (SalesForce would be preferable).
- Proficiency in French or Spanish.
- Policy and/or programme experience of working on child marriage, or broader work on the empowerment of girls and women.
