The Managing Editor is a key player in a busy in-house communications shop working across formats on a wide range of issues for a diverse global audience. She/he/they is responsible for managing the editorial direction, production and delivery of all written print and digital products for one of the world’s foremost international social justice philanthropies.
He/she/they will be superbly organized and a skilled manager of people and projects – serving as a central coordinator for the development and delivery of products of all kinds. He/she/they will have a proven ability to coordinate a diverse team of talented creatives and deliver successful outcomes in pressured environments. The Managing Editor will be responsible for developing and managing a stable of writers who understand Ford’s work and voice and can contribute at a high level to meet tight deadlines.
He/she/they must be a skilled editor and superior writer. They must have a love of storytelling and an appreciation of how an organization like Ford can use story to advance their work across a range of platforms. The Managing Editor will have an easy command of digital and printed content and serve as an editorial thought-partner for marketing, multimedia, art and design teams. Must be a proactive communicator and generator of ideas, who can build schedules for long-term projects as well as deliver efficiently on quick turnarounds.
Setting the foundation’s editorial direction and tone
Managing every detail of editorial projects and deliverables – creating production and editorial schedules and managing teams to ensure a steady and timely flow of high-level content
Managing the work and schedules of a stable of writers and consultants to meet foundation needs
Acting as the editorial thought partner for the art and design and web team as well as the Marketing Strategist to ensure that projects are aligned with the foundation brand and priority goals/target audiences
Serving as a trusted partner and project manager for the leadership team
Managing the editorial content of FordFoundation.org, ensuring the site’s content is kept fresh and up-to-date and the homepage real estate is used to maximum advantage
Overseeing - and jumping in to execute as needed - day-to-day editorial tasks including drafting and editing copy, creating blog and website content, helping to craft institutional messages, contributing to design products and digital campaigns
Superb editing and superior writing skills, with the ability to shape clear and compelling content with acute attention to detail
Superior management skills and ability to control schedules and enforce deadlines. Tasks include: project definition, scoping, planning, team resource allocation and management, along with attention to delivery time, scope, quality and budget
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a cross disciplinary environment with quick turnaround times
Strong knowledge of the latest technological advancements content management
Well-honed interpersonal skills, including the confidence to interact with and influence personnel at all levels, responsiveness, flexibility, initiative, decision making, conflict resolution, and tact
Excellent content judgment coupled with knowledge of the risk, legal, and ethical issues associated with publishing thought leadership on behalf of an organization
Ability to directly manage a team of writers, indirectly oversee other team members, and provide counsel and coaching as a leader within the team
Proven ability to build strategic working relationships with senior clients, peers and vendors
Strong listening and analytical skills
Master’s degree preferred (preferably in journalism/marketing/mass communication), or equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field.
At least 10 years of experience in a managerial capacity in a traditional or digital newsroom with a highly developed digital skill set
Technical skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Adobe Experience Manager (preferred)
