Position description

The Humphrey School of Public Affairs is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The School’s mission is to inspire, educate, and support innovative leaders to advance the common good in a diverse and changing world. The School is NASPAA-accredited, ranked nationally in the top ten U.S. based schools of public affairs, and widely recognized for examining public issues and shaping public policy and governance at the local, state, national, and international levels. The Humphrey School works to enrich the diversity of the University community and encourages faculty applicants from a wide range of backgrounds to apply. We seek candidates whose approach to teaching and research is innovative and inclusive in terms of structurally or historically underrepresented groups.

With this current search, the Humphrey School seeks to hire a tenure-track advanced Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor eligible for tenure at the University of Minnesota whose research, scholarship, academic leadership and service focus broadly on global policy. Evidence of established scholarship with the potential for contributions of national and international significance is required for candidates at the pre-tenure assistant professor level. Appointment at the tenured level of associate professor requires evidence of excellence and national/international policy-relevant impact in scholarly research, teaching and service.

The successful candidate must have strong, demonstrated applied research and teaching interests in comparative foreign policy, international relations, international economics and trade policy, and/or global environmental policy. Candidates with specific country expertise and strong regional and/or international interests will also be considered. Although the tenure home and position will be at the Humphrey School, there are ample opportunities to collaborate and affiliate with scholars in departments across the University of Minnesota.

Candidates must be committed to scholarly and policy-relevant research at the highest levels; willing and able to teach in the School’s core curriculum; provide leadership to its established public policy Masters and public affairs Ph.D. programs; be willing to help prepare students for professional careers; and function collaboratively in a multi-and inter-disciplinary environment.

A Ph.D. is required in public policy, international relations, development studies, economics, political science, political economy, sociology or related fields with a focus on international policy and global affairs. The Humphrey School is especially interested in candidates with a demonstrated interest in public policy, broadly construed, whose approach to teaching and research is both innovative and inclusive in terms of race, gender, class and ethnicity.

Applications should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, research statement and three samples of recent research (publications or manuscripts), teaching statement, and the names/addresses of three references(reference letters will be requested for short-listed candidates). All candidates must hold a PhD by the time of employment.

All interested candidates must apply online. Applications will be reviewed beginning October 7, 2019. The position will remain open until filled.
