This position is located at the Stars and Stripes' Headquarters, located in Washington, DC.

This is a Regular-Full-Time position, with 40 hours guaranteed per administrative week. This position includes benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for publishing news on top-level decisions at the Department of Veterans Affairs, covering veterans policies and legislation on Capitol Hill, and also for stories that shape the private lives of veterans and their families
  • Expert in working with social media, writing on daily print deadlines, filing stories for the web and able to shoot photos/videos to engage readers across multiple platforms; generating enterprise stories
  • Responsible for developing an understanding of newsmakers and events, able to provide perspective for the readership, able to develop sources and contacts within the civilian and military coverage area

Travel Required

25% or less - You may be expected to travel for this position.

  • Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-Verify) check
  • Completed and signed DA Form 3433 is required prior to entrance on duty
  • Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks requirements in accordance with AR 215-3, 2-15j to include a National Agency Check and Inquiries (NACI) background investigation.
  • Subject to extensive temporary duty travel, to include travelling to conflict/war zones and other hazardous areas
  • A valid motor vehicle operator's permit (US and/or local military-issued license in assigned area) is required
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays

Qualifications

1. At least one (1) year demonstrated experience in reporting and writing for a newspaper, journal, wire service, magazine, or online journalism. Previous work experience covering a variety of topics from hard news to features.
2. Demonstrated strong English language verbal and written skills.
3. Ability to use computers with standard software package is required.
4. Ability to take and transmit publishable photographs with a digital camera.

OR

Master's or equivalent graduate degree or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in Journalism or a related field.

Preferred skills:
*Two (2) years reporting and writing experience working for a commercial newspaper or news website.
*Able to work independently and as part of a team; strong organization and communication skills, work quickly and accurately on deadline, and able to manage multiple assignments

Highly Preferred Candidate: In addition to the qualifications above, applicant will be well-versed in working with social media, writing on daily print deadlines, filing stories for the web, and able to shoot photos/videos to engage readers across multiple platforms + possess experience with publishing news on top-level decisions at the Department of Veterans Affairs, covering Veterans' policies and legislation. (The experience must be clearly identified in your resume application.)
