Position description

The NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights is seeking a Senior Program Manager to lead its work on human rights challenges in the construction industry. The Senior Program Manager will oversee the Center’s ongoing work which seeks to address exploitative practices relating to the recruitment of construction workers from South Asia to the Gulf. They will conduct independent fieldwork, following up on the Center’s 2017 report “Making Workers Pay”, and organize stakeholder convenings aimed at improving the recruitment system in Gulf countries. To publicize the Center’s findings, the Senior Program Manager will be expected to write research papers, op-eds and blog posts.

In each area where we work, the Center undertakes cutting-edge research to identify root causes of persistent human rights challenges resulting from business practices at an industry level. Drawing on this research, the Center provides realistic but ambitious recommendations and works closely with stakeholders to implement solutions. The Senior Program Manager will support our ongoing strategic research and advocacy relating to business practices in the construction sector, while also helping the Center evolve its focus to address the rights of migrant workers in other industries and regions.

Founded in March 2013, the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights is the first-ever human rights center based at a business school. Our mission is to challenge and empower companies and future business leaders to make practical progress on human rights. Our current focus areas include manufacturing, construction, social media, and investment. We are looking for a creative and ambitious individual who is passionate about these issues.

Responsibilities

  • Working with the director, implement a research and advocacy strategy to improve business practices in the recruitment of migrant workers from South Asia to construction projects in the Middle East.
  • Conduct field research focused on business practices that results in a public report, as well as articles, op-eds, white papers and blog posts. Supervise graduate and undergraduate researchers and/or consultants, as required.
  • Maintain and further develop a network of contacts across the recruitment and construction industries.
  • Organize and manage closed-door meetings that include representatives from business, civil society, and government in South Asia and the Gulf.
  • Contribute to other ongoing projects at the Center on an as-needed basis.   

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or doctoral degree required
  • A minimum of five years of work experience in business and/or human rights within a company, advocacy organization, university, or think tank, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Familiarity with human rights challenges related to migrant labor in the Gulf region.
  • Significant fieldwork in a developing country preferred.
  • Experience managing and completing complex, sensitive projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing skills. Ability to produce rigorous, analytical research that is accessible to business, government, civil society, and the media.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate and maintain strong working relationships with people from different backgrounds.
  • A self-starter with the ability to adapt quickly and motivate others to achieve strategic objectives in a collaborative manner.
  • Fluency in English required; working knowledge of a South Asian language or Arabic is a plus.
