This post is located in East Africa Division of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations (DPPA -DPO). The incumbent reports to the Team Leader of the Horn of Africa Team and will primarily serve as a desk officer for Sudan and focal point for the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD).
Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the media pertaining to Sudan and the Horn of Africa region.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect Sudan, Horn of Africa and IGAD.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in the Horn of Africa, Office of the Special Envoy for the Horn Africa in Addis Ababa and UN agencies on the ground, as required.
- Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
- Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and non-governmental organizations.
- Selects, classifies and stores in computerized databases information relating to potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region.
- Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within the Horn of Africa, as required.
- Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
- Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, disarmament, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in mediation or negotiations is desirable. Experience working on peace and security and political issues related to Africa is desirable. Experience working with the policies, procedures and practices of the United Nations Security Council is desirable. Experience working with or on regional or sub-regional organizations in the Horn of Africa is desirable. Experience managing extra budgetary resources of regional projects or programmes is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English, is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
