About the Position

Internet Society (ISOC) Chapters comprise a volunteer network of individual ISOC members and are key contributors in carrying the mission of the Internet Society forward at the local level. The Community Engagement Manager for Asia-Pacific role requires significant interaction with Chapters and their volunteer leadership, individual members, regional partners and ISOC staff to strengthen and enhance the impact of the Internet Society worldwide in pursuing its mission.

The position reports to the Senior Director Chapters and Special Interest Groups. The role requires excellent communication skills, a proven track record of excellence in community building, diplomacy, conflict resolution, working in a multicultural environment and the ability to multi-task.

Location: Open to all Major Hubs in Asia-Pacific

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with the Community Engagement Team to implement programs for effective Chapter relations including oversight of the implementation of policies and procedures
  • Suggest and implement plans that encourage and maximize opportunities for Chapter leadership and members to contribute to the work of the Internet Society at the regional level
  • Support and assist Chapters in the development and implementation of plans to achieve their plans
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, define and manage the most appropriate communication channels for the region to keep Chapters and members informed of ISOC global and regional activities
  • Promote opportunities for engagement between Chapter and various Internet Society departments to leverage opportunities for information exchange and outreach
  • Coordinate the community engagement activities at regional events, such as the Asia Internet Symposiums, regional summits and other events including the Annual Regional Chapter leadership workshop in coordination with other ISOC Teams as appropriate
  • Work with Chapter leadership to guide and coordinate programs and services, including succession planning in Chapters and continued development of the Chapter and its activities locally
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Chapter leaders in the region, and address and resolve enquiries from existing and prospective Chapters
  • Compose and prepare regional community related presentations, briefs, reports and other relevant documents as and when required; and be able to synthesize similar presentations and briefs for Chapters based on ISOC’s key focus areas
  • Work with Chapters to ensure they adhere to the agreed Chapter Charter agreements and work with the Senior Director Chapters and SIGs to measure and improve the health of the Chapters
  • Act as internal advisor as to how to most effectively engage with our volunteer community in the regio
  • Ensure all Chapter related data is up to date and accurate in ISOC’s database (AMS
  • Assist in evaluating and processing applications for new Chapters
  • Plan and organize in-person and remote on-line meetings for Chapters; and facilitate regular regional community outreach, including webinars and information sessions
  • General administrative duties including, but not limited to, filing and preparation of documents, updating ISOC’s internal information systems, liaising with suppliers and service providers, liaising on event management logistics
  • Travel regionally and internationally as necessary to support ISOC’s objectives and the role;

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of membership and chapter-based association or non-profit
  • Good understanding of the challenges in working with a large and diverse international volunteer-based community spread across multiple time zones
  • Solid understanding of, and experience in working with, the diverse range of cultures and countries in the Asia-Pacific region
  • Understand the Internet ecosystem and have basic Internet technology knowledge
  • Demonstrated track record of community building in a volunteer or NGO capacity
  • Must have the ability to work with, and quickly gain the trust of, broad community and build enduring relationships across a vibrant international community
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in English, and fluency in at least one other Asian language, ability to converse in multiple Asian languages will be a distinct advantage
  • Solid multi-tasking capabilities and the ability to handle and prioritize many projects concurrently
  • Strong knowledge of IT, strong computer skills and familiarity with electronic communication applications and tools absolutely essential

  • Willingness and ability to work non-standard business hours to support the diverse time zones in the region
