Position description

• This vacancy shall be filled by a 3-year Term appointment in accordance with the Fund’s new employment rules taking effect on May 1, 2015.

The Communications Department (COM) is the International Monetary Fund's strategic center for communication. It develops and coordinates the IMF's external and internal communications strategy, shapes the IMF’s key messages, advises IMF management and staff on how best to convey key messages, and monitors and responds to what people outside the IMF say about the institution and its activity. The department is based at the IMF's headquarters in Washington, D.C.


The Media Relations Division is responsible for day-to-day contacts with journalists, the drafting of media communications issued on behalf of the Fund, the organization of media opportunities and events for management and staff, and for generally promoting public understanding of Fund policies and practices via the media.


The successful applicant will work closely with the Division’s managers as well as with a cross-divisional video group in carrying out the following key responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and direction to the department-wide Video Strategy Group by ensuring the highest editorial and production standards across COM’s video operations;
  • Oversee and coordinate script-writing and production of short feature and social media videos, and other digital content;
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with internal stakeholders as well as key broadcasters, digital news outlets, and senior producers/broadcast journalists to book and implement broadcast media outreach in support of the IMF’s communications goals; 
  • Formulate innovative strategies for video, broadcast, and online media outreach; 
  • Monitor usage and help prepare reports as needed; 
  • Help to raise the broadcast skills capacity in COM through training, and bring in cutting-edge developments and industry best practices into the department’s video work;
  • Contribute to other divisional and departmental efforts, as needed


The candidate will have an advanced university degree, or equivalent, in communications, international relations, languages, or a related, supplemented by a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a university degree, or equivalent, and ten years of relevant professional experience are required. Besides an excellent command of written and spoken English, he/she must be a consummate communications specialist with extensive experience in broadcasting, and good experience in digital media, video production, and creating content for the web. He/she must have a deep understanding of the IMF’s mission and operations, as well as a broad understanding of the strategic and policy issues relevant for the IMF’s work. 

The ideal candidate must have good knowledge of economic and financial issues, as well as a sound understanding of global social, political, and developmental issues; superior analytical and communications skills; excellent and proven judgement and team leadership; as well as outstanding negotiation, interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomatic skills.
