Position description

Full-time permanent contract – Brussels based – 4,200-4,500€ monthly gross salary depending on experience

This is an exciting new senior position at the Brussels-based Secretariat of the Eurochild network. It is suited to somebody with extensive project and people management experience and skills, combined with a passion for, and solid understanding of, children’s rights.

About Eurochild

In the 15 years since its establishment, Eurochild has grown into one of the most influential networks on children’s rights in Europe. It has almost 200 members across 34 countries in Europe, including national coalitions of children’s rights in 21 countries. It has pioneered new approaches to involving children directly in its work, including co-design of its biannual conference and supporting children’s self-advocacy. It engages at the highest political level at the European Union, for example it is advising on a future European Child Guarantee. Its current 3-year strategy has 3 advocacy priorities: ending child poverty (with a particular focus on early childhood development); ending institutional care for children and reforming child protection systems; and strengthening political recognition of children’s rights including the right of the child to be heard.

About this position

This new position is created to help take Eurochild to its next stage of development. Critically, we want to diversify our income sources and establish new funded partnerships both with the corporate and philanthropic sectors. We intend to build on our core strengths of member engagement, child participation and leveraging EU political and funding influence to catalyse positive change for children throughout Europe.

The Director of Programmes will supervise and support the work of 5 staff responsible for advocacy, communications, project management, and thematic coordination. He/she will be part of the Eurochild executive team, together with the Finance Director and Director of Operations, which will be responsible for decisions concerning resource planning, monitoring and evaluation, risk management, human resource development and fundraising. He/she will deputise the Secretary General in external representation responsibilities.

The specific responsibilities of the Director of Programmes are:

  • To build and sustain relations with prospective funding partners, to generate project ideas, and to oversee the development of project proposals;
  • To oversee the planning and delivery of projects, including the development of effective monitoring and evaluation tools to assess progress towards achieving the network’s strategic goals;
  • To support the professional growth and development of staff, working with professional and personal development plans;
  • To strengthen Eurochild’s reputation as a change agent, driving reform in laws, policies, practice and public spending to better respect children’s rights. This will be achieved by supporting colleagues to fine-tune our ways of working with members, with children and young people, and with politicians and policy makers at EU, national and sub-national levels, as well as enhancing our communications and external outreach.

Support and supervision

The Director of Programmes will report to the Secretary General. He/she will also receive support from the Eurochild management board Sub-Committee on Fundraising which meets roughly bimonthly and involves the Eurochild President (H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca), Treasurer and 2 ordinary members.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A minimum of 10 years relevant experience with a proven track record in people and project management;
  • Experience of working with and/or for the non-profit sector, preferably in the field of children’s rights;
  • Creative thinker with an entrepreneurial spirit, able to formulate ideas and see connections across sometimes disparate areas of interest;
  • Excellent communicator able to assimilate and convey complex information in ways that are compelling and easy to understand;
  • Excellent networking, negotiation and presentation skills;
  • Excellent listener who is sensitive to different points of view. High level of maturity, tact and diplomacy;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, other languages are an advantage.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the European Union and familiarity with the different EU institutions, the policy making process and the role of organized civil society;
  • Experience of fundraising with corporate and/or philanthropy sectors;
  • Expertise in one or more of Eurochild’s thematic priorities: ending child poverty, ending institutional care for children, child participation, early childhood development.
