About the Position

Since 2011, Namati has worked to build a movement of grassroots legal advocates worldwide. We’ve grown tremendously, from a small founding group of big-hearted advocates to a global staff of more than 150 people across 6 countries.  We’ve stewarded a sustainable budgetary expansion from $5M to $10M+. 

At the heart of our fundraising track record is our commitment to cultivating an ecosystem of funding partners deeply invested not just in our organization, but in the field of legal empowerment itself.  Every conversation we have, every concept note we pen, has the potential to crystallize for a potential ally, the power of putting the law into the hands of the people worldwide. Our development team members work not in a silo, but alongside our program staff as passionate champions of the depth, breadth, and potential of this work.

We are looking to engage a seasoned Deputy Director of Development to join this dynamic team and play a leading role in cultivating and stewarding resource relationships for us and our field’s long-term success. We are looking for an effective fundraiser across multiple constituencies that will emphasize building funder relationships and developing new strategic fundraising initiatives. 

The Deputy Director will focus on the following areas: 

  1. Oversee a significant portfolio of existing relationships. Private foundations and bilateral and multilateral institutions represent the lion’s share of our awards to date. The Deputy Director will lead on managing these relationships, from proposals and reports to timely communications and thoughtful touchpoints-- maintaining relationships that lead to ongoing renewal awards at the highest possible levels. 
  2. Cultivate and steward a pipeline of new funding relationships. Working with development and program staff, the Deputy Director will identify, vet, and cultivate a pipeline of productive new funding relationships. The Deputy Director will represent Namati at conferences and events, and expand Namati’s visibility across the philanthropic sector. They will also provide support, advice and guidance to program leads to ensure a consistent and coordinated fundraising approach. 
  3. Strengthen Namati’s major donor portfolio.  The Deputy Director will work closely with the Development Director to develop, roll-out, and steward this emerging strategy, particularly with respect to East Coast donors. Within 2-3 years, the Deputy Director will be positioned to manage a growing portfolio of DC or NY-based, mid-level and high net worth donor relationships.
  4. Identify strategic priorities for the development department. In the context of a collaborative, consultative team environment, the Deputy Director will help set the strategic direction for Namati’s overall development effort. This person will work closely with the Development Director and the Development Operations Officer to strengthen fundraising systems and policies at Namati, including future hires for the team. 
     

Here’s what you might have tackled last week -

  •  Drafted a proposal to a foundation on behalf of our Community Land Protection (CLP) Program, based on dialogue with the CLP team about their upcoming program priorities; oversaw the timely editing of the proposal, and managed the submission process.
  • Researched potential funders for our Right to Citizenship program via databases on Foundation Center, Guidestar.org, and Inside Philanthropy, and via your own network. Identified a number of new potential donors by carefully reviewing their existing grantees, grantmaking practices, and due diligence considerations, and then worked with the Citizenship team to undertake an outreach strategy.
  • Strategized with our CEO on engaging a new and promising potential constituency of individual donors: DC lawyers at large law firms. You might have mapped out potential engagement opportunities, such as brown-bag lunches at firms, and then convened separately with the Director of Development to put a detailed strategy in place. 
  • Facilitated a call between our Director of Global Learning and Practice, our COO, and our Kenya country Director to plan a massive proposal  in response to a U.S. government tender, providing a detailed timeline, roles chart, outline, and materials chart.
  • Conducted outreach across existing staff networks to establish an influential host committee for an upcoming house party geared towards high-net worth individual donors. 
  • Began scoping a potential donor delegation to Sierra Leone, so that potential major donors can witness our work first-hand.

Location 

This can be a remote position, open to any location. This role will require travel, when safe to do so. The person hired for this role will be asked to have a flexible schedule that allows for overlap with eastern and pacific time zones in the United States.

Compensation and position structure

We base our compensation on the markets where our staff operate. Given this is open globally, we will finalize compensation and responsibilities based on the qualifications, experience, and country location of the person joining. Early in the selection process we’ll discuss salary ranges with candidates. If you have salary requirements, please share them in your cover letter.
