Position description

The University of California’s only school of international affairs, the School of Global Policy & Strategy (GPS) provides a unique resource for training leaders, generating ideas, and building networks for the Pacific Century. GPS is internationally renowned for its innovative programs, superb faculty and outstanding students and now stands among the world's top graduate schools of international relations and is the established leader in its focus on Asia and the Americas. GPS instructs a diverse student body consisting of 60% domestic and 40% international students in MPP, MCEPA, MIA, BA-MIA, MAS, joint PhD with Department of Political Science and executive education programs. GPS also administers the International Studies Program, a fast-growing interdisciplinary program with over 1700 declared undergraduate majors, that offers a rigorous curriculum for undergraduate students interested in international affairs. Offering nine B.A. degree options, three combined BA/MIA program, and a minor program, the International Studies Program explores the international, national and local processes that have, over time, shaped globalization. GPS is also the parent organization to major research centers: Center on Global Transformation (CGT), Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, 21st Century China Center, Fudan-UC Center on China, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC), Policy Design and Evaluation Lab (PDEL), Laboratory on International Law and Regulation (ILAR), and Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT).

Under direct supervision, this position will entail close collaboration and assistance with all stages of new and ongoing empirical projects in political economy, development, and economic history. The incumbent will work with large-scale administrative, survey, and census data from Indonesia and the United States.

Under direct supervision, acquires skills and knowledge of professional concepts in research data analysis. Works on small projects or segments of projects with limited scope and complexity.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in performing statistical analyses of categorical and qualitative data.

  • Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics, statistics, computer science, mathematics, political science, or a related field.

  • Statistical analysis, systems programming, and database design skills to perform research analysis duties.

  • Experience with computer/word processing skills, with experience on Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, spreadsheet and database software such as JMP, R, and SPSS and citations databases in Endnote.

  • Knowledge of research function. Acquiring ability to perform research analysis duties. Must be detail-oriented with strong programming experience in Stata and/or R.

  • Ability to effectively manage time and see assigned parts of projects through to completion on deadline. Proven ability to juggle multiple related projects in parallel with concurrent and staggered deadlines.

  • Basic consultation and communication skills.

  • Ability to perform standard, repetitive tasks at a computer. Basic knowledge of various computer platforms with experience using Mac or PC. Willingness and ability to learn new computer programs and tools as needed.

  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate ideas in writing, prepare reports, and assist in writing and editing professional manuscripts for publication.

  • Demonstrated organizational and project coordination skills, including ability to work independently, determine appropriate priorities, and complete projects accurately, efficiently, and with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a good working relationship with a wide variety of people, including staff, faculty, and students, using tact, diplomacy, confidentiality and flexibility.

PREFERRED:

  • Strong programming experience in Stata and/or R. Familiarity with GIS and Python.
