Position description

Allied for Startups asbl, the leading global voice for the startup ecosystem, is seeking a senior, experienced executive to lead our global operations and manage our European team.

As Director-General, the successful candidate will lead the Secretariat, set and lead the overall global strategy of the association, liaise with our Board of Directors, member organizations, advisors, and other key stakeholders, lead fundraising and revenue generation for the association, be the public face of the association, and manage our staff. The role will provide globally-focused leadership, lead and structure day-to-day operations of our Brussels office and staff, as well as develop our international presence and strategy.

The successful candidate will be based in Brussels, and have both a broad network in the EU institutions and experience in navigating both global policy regimes and the startup economy, having led key wins in either or both arenas. Existing networks with startup ecosystems and other prominent policy development venues, as well as experience in technology and/or entrepreneurship policy development, and/or previous association leadership, especially for organizations based in Belgium, are added benefits.

Objectives of this role

  • Work closely with Members, board directors, advisors, key sponsors, other stakeholders, and committees to assess and address issues affecting the organisation;
  • Oversee strategic development and daily operations of the organisation, providing executive direction for program strategies and efficiencies, compliance, and quality assurance;
  • Identify and address staffing requirements for efficient operations, and maintain a strong work culture that attracts and retains people while driving the organisation’s mission;
  • Increase awareness and impact of the organization by being the main spokesperson and liaison with the media;
  • Develop an actionable plan for fundraising and managing monthly cash flow;
  • Comply with all national and local regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Meet aggressive annual fundraising goals, in partnership with the board of directors, by securing financial support from foundations, corporations, and others;
  • Coordination of our activities, priorities, policy goals, and political engagement across the Board and with our Members and sponsors;
  • Work with existing staff and board to lead coordination and direction of yearly activities and achieve our KPIs. Serve as the face of the organisation and participate in external events to increase visibility, credibility, and market brand, and develop strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness and expand programs;
  • Manage staff members and vendors whose experiences, cultures, and languages reflect the community served by the organization;
  • Frequent travel may be necessary.

 

Qualifications

Required skills and qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience in senior management, preferably with advocacy, trade, and/or nonprofit organizations;
  • Successful track record in fundraising in the non-profit sector;
  • Proven experience of building alliances with like-minded trade groups or companies;
  • Knowledge of leadership and management principles for nonprofit organizations;
  • Proven success working with a board of directors;
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, with an innovative approach to association leadership;
  • Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organisation.

Preferred skills and qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in technology and/or entrepreneurship policy, EU institutions engagement, government relations, and/or stakeholder management;
  • Experience in managing budgets;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English.
