Position description

The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative is hiring a skilled and dedicated Head of Asia Campaigns & Advocacy who can lead our political engagement with governments across Asia – particularly in South and South East Asia. If you are looking for an exciting role helping scale a huge, ambitious campaign with significant political advocacy and campaign strategies, while working with a global team and network of people scaling demands for a just transition to a fossil fuel free future - this position is for you. 

The Head of Asia Campaigns & Advocacy will join the fast-growing International Support Team for the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. They will work closely with the Campaigns, Political, Partnerships and Communications teams as well as other regional campaign and advocacy leads to ensure that this global campaign scales significantly across Asia — with the ultimate goal of a number of nation-states across Asia formally supporting the proposed Fossil Fuel Treaty. 

Reaching this goal will require a skilled political strategist and campaigner who can help build a powerful advocacy effort in Asia alongside our global strategy. This will involve direct political engagement with policymakers, as well as coordination with our growing network of civil society organisations, high-profile individuals, youth activists, cities, subnational governments and ultimately nation-states working together to build momentum towards further political support of the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal.

This position is full-time, exempt, and salaried. Salary is calculated based on location and experience of the successful candidate in the range of 60,000 - 80,000 USD. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a campaign strategy to secure formal support for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty from nation-states in Asia particularly in target countries across South Asia and South East Asia.
  • Scale diplomatic engagement with Asian policymakers, diplomats, governments and regional bodies in collaboration with other team members and partners leading on diplomatic engagement through convenings high level dialogues, bilaterals and other meetings.
  • Produce regionally targeted briefing materials for policy and decision makers and contribute to policy research outputs led by relevant team members
  • Support consultation with relevant government leads in target and endorsing countries to provide input and strategizing on proposed Treaty provisions
  • Create and leverage key moments to build strategic momentum toward a Fossil Fuel Treaty and at regional and global multilateral events, including the Asia Climate Summit / Week, UNGA and other key events as identified within the Asia Campaign Strategy. 
  • Foster and deepen new and existing partnerships with Asian movements and civil society organizations and other institutions from a broad range of constituencies, expanding the network of groups and voices calling for Asian governments to support a Fossil Fuel Treaty. Support this network with internal coordination such as calls, webinars and listservs.
  • Secure high-profile city and subnational endorsements across Asia and ensure regular and deeper engagement with them to build further momentum behind the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal. 
  • Expand and activate the group of Champions and high-profile individuals across Asia who are backing the Treaty campaign and scaling communications
  • Support public communications in Asia demonstrating growing support for the Fossil Fuel Treaty and a just transition, including collaboration with the Policy, Political and Communications Team and partners to produce research outputs as well as communications products for social media, traditional media and events.
  • Support fundraising efforts to increase capacity for the Treaty campaign in Asia and the potential to inject further capacity into partner organisations across the region.

Experience and attributes:

Required:

  • A deep passion for climate justice and supporting an equitable transition to a world without coal, oil or gas.
  • At least 5 years of experience in political advocacy or campaigning
  • Experience in engaging, relationship building  and activating a network of organisations and individuals to join a campaign and advocate for a specific policy demand
  • Experience in direct diplomatic engagement, ideally with policymakers in national governments across Asia
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills, strong initiative, and motivation.
  • Commitment to contributing to an anti-racist, decolonial, inclusive organisational culture.
  • Ability to work irregular hours and with a remote and virtual team to participate in a global initiative.
  • Fluency in English required

Desired:

  • Fluency in one or more of the following languages is highly desirable: Arabic, Nepali, Filipino, Tamil, Indonesian, Malay, Mandarin or Vietnamese 
  • A deep understanding of the political landscape in Asia – especially in South East Asia and/or South Asia – with a focus on energy, extraction and climate policy areas
  • Capacity building experience including facilitation, training and coaching
  • Experience in campaign communications including copywriting, digital advocacy, social media or content production
