Position description

Who are Energy Traders Europe?

Energy Traders Europe represents 170 companies from over 30 European countries. Those companies trade electricity, gas and carbon (and various other products). We aim to make sure that power and gas markets are well-designed, competitive and pan-European. This allows them to make the biggest possible contribution to keeping costs down, ensuring security of supply, ensuring competitiveness and enabling the transition to a carbon neutral economy. We represent our member companies’ interests by working with decision makers to shape the design of markets, by developing standard contracts which make trading simpler and by developing IT standards to make the exchange of transaction data easier. The role we’re seeking to fill

Renewable and low carbon gases have an important role to play in decarbonising Europe’s energy system. The EU is seeking to achieve growth of the market to 35bcm of biogas and 20 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030. Natural gas, in turn, is often referred to as a “transition fuel” that can facilitate speedier decarbonisation and the recent energy crisis has evidenced that its role spans far beyond electricity production and remains important for the European economy. In both cases cooperation between Member States in completing an internal market for gas is central to EU’s competitiveness and resilience.

However, the past few years have been marked by a growing number of interventions in market functioning, integration between Member States and an increasingly nationalistic approach to developing markets for renewable and low-carbon gases. These interventions have collectively affected the competitiveness of the economy and created additional costs to consumers. Thus Energy Traders Europe is focussed on working with policy makers to reestablish trust in the market and create the foundations for a pan European market for gases that will enable cost-efficient decarbonisation of the entire economy.

We are seeking a person who can understand the considerable complexities of this market and identify the barriers which the current framework could create for our member companies. That person should be comfortable working with senior stakeholders to make the case to change those rules and should be capable of identifying ways in which the rules could evolve.

Your role will involve:

  • Support the work of our Gas Committee and several associated Task Forces and Working Groups (working closely with other members of the gas team);
  • Make sure that the work of those groups is well-organised, allows all members to contribute and leads to the production and delivery of effective and timely advocacy material;
  • Ensure that the views of all member companies are reflected in positions, provide information and feedback and field questions. Develop a network of contacts across the industry and, on occasion, represent Energy Traders Europe at external events.

The person we’re looking for

  • Will be interested in the complexities of EU gas market functioning and the pathways for its decarbonisation;
  • Will have at least 3 years’ experience, and ideally more, of working in the energy industry;
  • Will be able to write and speak English fluently. Knowledge of other languages, in particular from the CSEE region would be an additional asset. Will understand how the EU institutions and decision-making processes operate;
  • Will either be based in Brussels or able to commit to being in Brussels frequently;
  • Will have strong communication and advocacy skills – with the ability to simplify complex messages and target them to the relevant audience.

You’ll succeed because…

  • You are able to understand complex and fast changing areas of policy and regulation and assess the impacts of those changes for our members;
  • You will be able to understand member company’s diverse interests and, in doing so, identify opportunities to build consensus;
  • You are well-organised, able to plan effectively and are comfortable juggling several competing priorities;
  • You are a team player with strong collaboration skills and a can-do attitude;
  • You are able to understand complex pieces of law and regulation, while remaining able to distil complex ideas and communicate with clarity;
  • You thrive in a fast-paced environment and are comfortable working under pressure;
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to interact with colleagues and member companies effectively and comfortably.

You’ll love it because…

  • You’ll be part of a dynamic, diverse and very experienced team;
  • You’ll be working in, and shaping, an emerging sector which has a significant role to play in decarbonising Europe;
  • You’ll have significant flexibility about how you do the job;
  • There will be opportunities to represent Energy Traders Europe at meetings and events across Europe and to engage with senior stakeholders.
