Position description
The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) seeks a dynamic and dedicated full-time Executive Director to lead and sustain its efforts to advance the leadership and professional development of women judges. IAWJ is looking for an individual who is creative, entrepreneurial, and has the vision to support and empower IAWJ’s global network of women judges in order to advance equality and human rights. The Executive Director must be flexible, detail-oriented, a multi-tasker and capable of both working independently and as an effective team leader. At the same time, the Executive Director must deal with a diverse, multicultural judicial membership around the world.
The Executive Director drives the organization’s overall strategy including fundraising, membership, operations, and is responsible for developing resources and growing membership and partnerships with stakeholders around the world. The Executive Director implements a strategy and strengthens critical capabilities to clearly articulate IAWJ’s funding priorities effectively with potential funders. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring IAWJ’s consistent achievement of its mission, with particular attention to its organizational, financial and legal compliance.
The International Association of Women Judges currently consists of 48 active affiliated national/regional membership associations of women judges. Since its founding in 1991, IAWJ has created a vital and growing network of judges from diverse legal systems to share knowledge and exchange insights through grant funded activities, conferences, and webinars on a range of topics including human trafficking and a judicial perspective which fosters human rights. IAWJ is a non-profit, non-governmental, non-political organization of over 6,000 members at all levels of the judiciary in more than 100 countries and territories. IAWJ has special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. Key Responsibilities
Organizational Management
- In conjunction with the IAWJ International Board and the Board of Managerial Trustees (BMT), develops and implements critical program priorities of the IAWJ;
- Develops and implements a multi-year strategy and plan to expand IAJW’s visibility, resources, and impact;
- Responsible for all aspects of the organization’s day-to-day operations;
- Develops and oversees the IAWJ's budget and cash flow projections in close consultation with the Financial Administrator and Finance & Audit Committee;
- Hires, manages, and leads staff, interns and contractors;
- Oversees HR functions, organizational risk management efforts (insurance coverage and legal liability), and contracts with consultants and vendors;
- Solicits pro bono support where needed and maintains relationships with pro bono organizations (law firms, partner organizations, event hosts, etc.); and
- Ensures compliance with federal, state and local legal requirements, including filing of all legally required documents and reports.
Fundraising & Membership
- Coordinates & serves as the lead fundraiser for the organization:
- In that role, and in conjunction with the BMT, develops and implements a multi-year fundraising effort to ensure IAWJ’s long term sustainability;
- Identifies potential donors, maintains donor lists, and generates donation requests and acknowledgments;
- Develops fundraising materials & events in conjunction with the marketing team;
- Coordinates and directs efforts to maintain and expand membership by developing initiatives to attract new members;
- Builds robust relationships with potential programmatic and funding partners; and
- Oversees the management of database and fundraising personnel.
Board Administration
- Serves as an ex-officio member of the International Board of Directors, the policy-setting authority with international representation, and BMT, charged with financial and management oversight and support;
- Maintains governing documents and prepares documents for International Board and BMT meetings; and
- Reports to the IAWJ President and to the Chair of the BMT.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree and a minimum of five to seven years of experience in managing a membership association and/or non-profit organization;
- Exceptional and proven manager of people and programming, with attention to detail and an ability to remain calm under pressure and meet rapid, multiple deadlines in a fast-paced team-oriented environment;
- Highly motivated self-starter and problem solver with a strong work ethic, and a demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and stakeholders;
- Proven track record of successful resource development, including fundraising, and donor relations;
- Ability to communicate regularly and effectively with IAWJ Governance structures;
- Working knowledge of nonprofit financial management and budgeting;
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Google Drive, and social media platforms. Familiarity with QuickBooks, MemberClicks or other CRMs, and/or design software is also a plus;
- Fluency in English; facility in other languages a plus; and
- Legal authority to work full-time in the United States.
