The Department of Politics and Public Affairs (PPA) at Denison University invites applications for a year-long visiting assistant position in comparative politics beginning Fall 2025. We seek applicants who are trained in comparative politics. Area of specialization is open, but we are interested in candidates who can teach classes with a regional focus beyond Europe/North America. The teaching load for this position is a 3-3.
Our newly inaugurated program in Politics and Public Affairs provides our students an integrated view of politics emphasizing links between theory and practice. Our major is structured as a learning community, where undergraduates pursue a track of interest that aligns with traditional subfields and have multiple opportunities to share their knowledge with peers. Our majors must complement classroom experiences with a department-approved off campus learning component. We are enthusiastic about our new approach to teaching about politics and public affairs, and we seek a VAP who shares our excitement. The successful candidate is expected to have strong interest in teaching in a liberal arts setting, with preference for individuals with demonstrated ability in effective teaching at the undergraduate level.
The successful candidate must have the demonstrated ability to teach PPA 102 Introduction to Policy-Making in Democracies as well as interest and ability to teach upper level classes in their area of expertise. The ability to teach an additional introductory course is a plus (PPA 122 Introduction to Global Governance or PPA 132 Introduction to Theorizing about Political Life).
Candidates should have completed a Ph.D. in Political Science or closely-related field by the start date but ABDs will also be considered. Independent teaching experience (beyond TA) strongly preferred.
