Position description

The International Crisis Group is offering a great learning opportunity to work with a small and dedicated Early Warning and Research team to help compile CrisisWatch, Crisis Group’s global conflict tracker, assist in the unit’s horizon scanning projects, and support the organization’s research needs. In this internship you will discover how Crisis Group approaches, produces and conveys research and early warning on deadly conflict in order to prevent wars and shape policies that will build a more peaceful world.

This full-time, six-month internship will start in June 2025. The candidate will be preferably based in Brussels where the team is located, or in London where Crisis Group has an office. The internship position will only be available to students who are enrolled in an academic program and able to integrate the internship into their curriculum for credit; or students who have secured external funding (e.g., grants or scholarships) to support their participation.

We offer you learning on the job through:

  • Assisting the Early Warning & Research Unit in preparing and publishing our monthly CrisisWatch bulletin, a tool designed to help decision-makers prevent deadly violence by keeping them up-to-date with developments in over 70 conflicts and crises, identifying trends and alerting them to risks of escalation and opportunities to advance peace;
  • Researching and drafting background materials on conflict issues for the EW & Research Unit upon request;
  • Maintaining and updating the EW & Research Unit’s databases;
  • Attending meetings and other events (online or face-to-face) and keeping minutes as appropriate;
  • Carrying out administrative duties relevant to the EW & Research Unit’s work.

Qualifications include:

  • English language skills at native-speaker level;
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of conflict, peace and security issues;
  • Strong writing skills;
  • Strong organizational skills with a keen eye for detail;
  • Professional experience within an international relations environment/NGO desirable; and
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office and online research tools;
  • Authorisation to work in either Belgium or the United Kingdom.

The successful candidate will gain insight into Crisis Group’s core work of providing independent research and analysis on deadly conflict. Crisis Group aspires to be the leading organisation combining expert field research, analysis and engagement with policymakers across the world in order to mobilise leaders to avoid looming conflicts, resolve or better manage deadly conflicts.

We will strive to give the intern the opportunity to interact with others across the organisation, particularly field-based analysts and colleagues in the EU advocacy and communication teams.
