Intern – Trade Law, Business Environment, and AI Applications

Work Location: Home-Based
Expected Duration: ASAP until 31 December 2025 / 31 January 2026

Duties and Responsibilities

Background

  • The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a joint technical agency of the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
  • Provides technical assistance and capacity building to policymakers, the private sector, and trade and investment support organizations.
  • Assists developing and transition economies in leveraging trade for sustainable growth and employment.
  • Promotes sustainable and inclusive development goals through trade, connecting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to global value chains.
  • Works with national partners to enhance the business and regulatory environment, improve MSME competitiveness, and create opportunities for vulnerable and marginalized groups, especially women and youth, through digital channels.

Description of Duties/Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Senior Officer, BTIF/DMD, the Intern will:

  • Undertake research and analysis of strategic legal and regulatory reforms at national, regional, and international levels.
  • Assist in refining a model methodology for legal instrument analysis and AI-based treaty assessment.
  • Support the design and testing of AI-driven models for treaty and law assessment, provision drafting, categorization, and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development of an AI-assisted model for analyzing and automating commercial contracts.
  • Help set up a global model contracts database, including research, gap analysis, categorization, and AI-driven provision improvement.
  • Assist in refining AI and data analysis methodologies for legal instruments in sectors such as maritime, contracts, competition and consumer protection, dispute settlement, and investment.
  • Support the development of AI-based models to analyze treaty implementation and law/regulation compliance.
  • Assist in creating models to track economic data linked to trade agreements and measure their performance.
  • Collaborate on projects aimed at modernizing business ecosystems and improving regulatory frameworks.
  • Assist in researching and developing project proposals for donor submission.
  • Undertake related tasks as needed

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Enrolled in or recently graduated (within one year) from a university programme at Bachelor’s or Master’s level in law, business law, international/private/public law, trade law and development, public administration, computer science, mathematics, or related fields.
  • Skills:
    • Advanced computer literacy; programming knowledge is an advantage.
    • Understanding of trade and development issues.
    • Familiarity with results-based management and project monitoring/evaluation.
    • Strong drafting skills.
    • Exposure to economic and law indicators is an asset.
    • Team spirit and ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Languages

  • Fluency in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese.
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

Learning Elements

  • Gain experience in AI applications for trade law and legal services.
  • Learn about legal analysis, law-making, and emerging AI-law trends.
  • Develop skills in project management and development.
  • Gain exposure to technical assistance within international organizations.

Internship Conditions

  • Interns are not financially remunerated.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the intern’s responsibility.
  • Non-residents may need appropriate visas and work authorizations before starting.
