The opportunity

The program

Australia Awards PNG (AAPNG) supports Papua New Guinea’s development by strengthening education, knowledge transfer, and institutional capacity, while building enduring Australia–PNG relationships. The program delivers high-quality education, fosters institution-to-institution partnerships, and develops the next generation of PNG leaders.

The role

The Scholarships Specialist is responsible for leading and managing a team who deliver a high standard of scholarship activities across all phases of the scholarship cycle.

This is a short-term adviser position of up to 6 months in duration with the possibility of extension. The Specialist will be engaged full-time for the duration of the contract, and be based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea for at least the majority of the contract term.

Key responsibilities

      • Deliver Australia Awards and PNG scholarships as per policies and annual plans
      • Manage promotions, applications, assessment and fair selection processes
      • Coordinate pre‑departure support and on award enrichment for scholar mobilisation & engagement
      • Monitor and approve award variations and maintain accurate DFAT scholarship records
      • Maintain scholarships budget, monthly forecasting and regular financial reporting
      • Contribute to communications, GEDSI championing, continuous improvement and safe workplace


Selection criteria

      • Postgraduate qualification in education, HRD, international development or business or other related field
      • Senior experience (10+ years desirable) in international education, admissions or scholarship management
      • Proven budgeting, financial planning and expenditure monitoring skills
      • Strategic leadership and staff support for service delivery and meeting deliverables
      • Experience with Australia Awards and cross‑cultural stakeholder engagement
      • Demonstrated adaptability, innovation and resilience in complex environments (PNG/Pacific preferred)
