Position description
AELP seeks an experienced legal expert on white collar crime and government corruption to drive our work on corporate accountability and anti-corruption. This role will combine deep legal analysis with strategic policy advocacy and public communications to ensure that laws and enforcement mechanisms are deployed effectively.
The core function of this role is to analyze the direct link between concentrated economic power and the rise in white collar crime and government corruption. The ideal candidate will be tasked with identifying opportunities to enforce or strengthen laws restore meaningful and robust enforcement at this critical intersection to restore corporate accountability. The ideal candidate is passionate about tackling concentrated power and capable of clearly communicating law and policy in service of a bold agenda for accountability and reform.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct legal research and analysis on federal and state white collar crime and government corruption issues, with a specific focus on cases involving corporate concentration and alleged misconduct. This includes analyzing:
- The link between concentrated market power and financial fraud, illicit political influence, and abuses of the regulatory system.
- The existing legal framework for civil and criminal corporate accountability and how to strengthen the law to tackle undue influence by dominant firms.
- Legal theories for enforcement of anti-corruption laws against both private and public actors.
- Draft and edit a range of high-impact accessible content, including policy memos, regulatory comments, non-technical reports, briefs, and articles aimed at members of Congress, state enforcers and the media on new anti-corruption and corporate crime enforcement strategies.
- Develop legal and policy strategies to support the investigation and prosecution of corporate misconduct.
- Collaborate with the policy, communications, and advocacy teams to advance the organization’s agenda.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for policymakers, regulators, journalists, and coalition partner and represent AELP in public forums, media appearances, and policy discussions.
- Identify and coordinate opportunities to submit amicus curiae briefs or file other legal interventions.
- Cultivate work of legal scholars, former government officials, and advocacy allies to bolster the organization's anti-corruption and corporate accountability work.
Qualifications
- 4-5 years of experience in white-collar criminal prosecution, government investigations, and anti‑corruption or related corporate enforcement matters, including relevant work experience at the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s office, or state attorney’s general office.
- An ability to develop and execute legal research projects with light supervision.
- An orientation to produce content and solutions that are accessible and implementable.
- Creative thinking, excellent research, analysis, and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with external partners.
- Methodical in approaching projects, strong time management skills, attention to detail, and ability to execute multiple work streams simultaneously.
- An interest in politics and awareness of day-to-day political developments relevant to economic policy.
This is a full time, exempt position. The salary range is $125,000 - $135,000 plus excellent employer-paid full coverage benefits for employee, including health, dental, and vision, as well as generous vacation and unlimited sick days, employer matching 401k plan, and up to twelve weeks parental leave. Locating in Washington, D.C. is preferred but strong remote candidates will be considered.
