Position description
The Deputy Executive Director is a lead, hands-on operations position for a labor professional to support the mission of the News Media Guild (NMG), a labor union that has pioneered workplace rights for journalists and information workers across the U.S. for nearly 100 years.
NMG advances professionalism by empowering news and information workers in the areas of collective bargaining, organizing and mobilization.
The successful candidate will have experience in mentoring volunteer activists as part of the mission to empower workers.
The position also involves supervision/administration of clerical, IT, financial, compliance and other functions necessary to support operations of the Local.
The position directly reports to the NMG Executive Director (formerly administrator). It also reports to the governing body and membership as set forth in the Local’s governing documents.
Responsibilities
- Under the direction of the Executive Director, assists with all aspects of collective bargaining: organizing, processing of grievances, contract negotiation, and mobilization.
- Mentors and trains volunteer shop stewards and officers in effective ways of building worker power consistent with the mission(s) and ethical standards of the worker groups NMG represents.
- Helps formulate policies and initiatives with elected representatives to build the union.
- Professional knowledge of NLRA, LMRDA, IRS, and similar laws addressing collective bargaining and labor organization governance, duties, operations, rights and obligations.
- Maintains grievance files and office files and implements an efficient system for other staff to access files and records including updating membership and dues processing records.
- Oversees financial and clerical operations in accordance with governing law and local policies, along with the Executive Director, Secretary Treasurer, bookkeeper, payroll firm and local auditor
- Maintains inventory of office supplies; orders new supplies as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Paid professional experience as a labor negotiator, grievance advocate, mobilizer, and organizer.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to effectively implement strategic and organizational goals
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Proficient with Google Workspace suite
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Adobe Acrobat. Access, Clio or other case management software experience is desirable.
- Conversational Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Education and Experience:
A college degree is required, but candidates offering sufficient experience may be exempted from this requirement.
At least five (5) years previous work for a U.S. labor organization, with references, is required. Private sector experience preferred.
Satisfactory completion of background check.
