Associate or Full Professor of Government (International Security)

William & Mary

Position description

The Department of Government at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenured position at the Associate or Full Professor level in international security. Appointment will begin August 10, 2026. We are interested in individuals with research and teaching expertise in international security. We welcome candidates whose research substantively engages one or more additional areas, including U.S. foreign policy, diplomacy and statecraft, U.S. national security, and global public health.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. This is a joint hire between the Department of Government and the Global Research Institute (GRI). The applicant is expected to maintain a high-impact research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body. As part of the hiring offer, the new faculty member will receive a significant startup package that includes flexible research funding and support from professional staff at GRI, to develop and grow a sustainable research initiative that generates external support.

In their first year at William & Mary, the new faculty member will have no teaching responsibilities and be fully dedicated to research development with significant support from GRI. In the second and third years, the new faculty member will teach 1 course per semester, including a credit-bearing research course in the Government Department that integrates undergraduate students into the faculty member's research program. Beginning in the fourth year, the faculty member will transition to a standard faculty position in the Department of Government with a teaching expectation of 2 courses per semester.
