Position description
SFP is seeking a Policy and Research Intern (student internship) to support the implementation of the organisation’s multi-annual strategy and annual work plans.
The intern will work closely with the policy team. The role combines policy monitoring, research, advocacy support, and project coordination, providing a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in EU policymaking and public health advocacy.
This internship is intended for students currently enrolled in a university programme who wish to gain practical experience in EU policy and public health advocacy.
The position is a six-month unpaid internship, based in Brussels (Belgium) with the possibility of hybrid or remote work depending on the candidate’s location and circumstances.
It is possible to combine the internship with a Master’s thesis or academic research project, depending on the requirements of the student’s university programme.
Education
- Current student (Bachelor’s or Master’s level) in a relevant field such as political science, EU studies, international relations, public health, law, or public policy.
- Strong interest in EU policymaking and public health policy.
- Possibility to combine the internship with a Master’s thesis or research project related to tobacco control or EU health policy.
Key Responsibilities
You will support the team’s work towards the implementation of its annual work plan and achievement of its objectives.
The work will roughly be divided across the following headings:
- Policy: Monitor policy and legislative developments in key areas for SFP (Tobacco Products Directive, Tobacco Tax Directive, Smoke-free legislation, tobacco industry interference, etc.).
- Advocacy: Draft notes/emails to EU tobacco control and public health network and EU policymakers; Draft, edit and quality check reports, briefings and other advocacy tools.
- Project support: Monitor progress towards SFP deliverables; Draft and edit reports for ongoing projects.
- Research: Conduct research on tobacco and public health developments at EU and national level.
- Support the preparation of briefings, reports, and policy materials by collecting, analysing, and summarising relevant information and data.

Experience, Skills and Knowledge
- Understanding of EU institutions and legislative processes.
- Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to synthesise complex policy information.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with strong drafting skills. Other EU languages are an advantage.
- Knowledge of EU public health policy, regulatory policy, or tobacco control is an asset.
