About The Alliance for Diplomacy and Justice
The Alliance for Diplomacy and Justice centers human rights within U.S. foreign policy. Founded in 2025, we are a group of former senior diplomats, former elected officials, and human rights experts committed to making the United States more safe, equitable, and true to its potential through a foreign policy that prioritizes human rights and justice for everyone. At a time when human rights are facing unprecedented attacks from the U.S. government, we are making the case for a foreign policy rooted in human rights, accountability, and multilateral engagement. We counter harmful policies and make the case to the public, to policymakers, and to the press that human rights must be at the center of how the United States engages with the world. The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Communications Strategist to help grow The Alliance's visibility and influence at a critical time for our organization. This is a role for someone who thinks strategically, writes persuasively, moves quickly, and thrives at the intersection of policy/advocacy and public narrative. As a year-old organization, the inaugural Communications Strategist will launch the organization’s communications department.
You will lead the communications operation of our growing organization — driving our earned media presence, shaping our social media presence and newsletter, and working with our advocacy partners on shared communications efforts. This role reports to The Alliance’s Co-Presidents and works closely with The Alliance’s Co-Founders and Principals.
What You'll Do
MEDIA RELATIONS & RAPID RESPONSE
- Develop and execute proactive media strategies that elevate The Alliance's voice and individual Co-Founders and Principals across national media, local media as appropriate, affinity and progressive media, and new media (Substacks, podcasts, etc).
- Build and maintain relationships with reporters covering foreign policy, national politics, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQI+ rights, gender, and related issues.
- Pitch stories, secure coverage, and position The Alliance Co-Founders and Principals and partners as credible, go-to sources. In addition, build long-term relationships with reporters.
- Draft and place op-eds and letters to the editor.
- Monitor the news cycle and foreign policy developments to identify moments that call for an immediate response from The Alliance.
- Continue to refine our rapid response infrastructure, including holding statements and approvals processes, so The Alliance can respond quickly and with a clear point of view.
- Draft timely statements, social content, and talking points that are sharp and on-message.
MESSAGING & STRATEGY
- Use The Alliance's core messaging framework to ensure consistency across social media channels/the website, audiences, and spokespeople.
- Translate nuanced foreign policy and human rights issues into compelling narratives for The Alliance’s priority audiences.
- Adapt the narrative strategy based on the evolving political environment.
OWNED CONTENT
- Oversee The Alliance's newsletter strategy, including editorial planning, writing, and performance tracking.
- Guide The Alliance’s social media presence across platforms, with a focus on LinkedIn, with a strong sense of voice, timing, and audience engagement.
- Collaborate with Co-Founders and Principals to maintain/update our website content and other owned assets that deepen audience engagement.
PARTNER & COALITION COMMUNICATIONS
- Work with partner organizations, coalitions, and advocacy groups to align messaging and amplify shared priorities.
- Support joint communications efforts, including coordinated press pushes, sign-on statements, and shared campaign efforts.
Qualifications
- You have 7+ years of experience in communications, public affairs, or media, ideally in a nonprofit, advocacy, or foreign policy context.
- A strong track record of securing earned media coverage in relevant outlets and building press relationships.
- Experience with rapid response in a fast-moving policy or advocacy environment.
- Experience developing tailored and compelling social media content for leaders, from understanding their unique voice to optimizing engagement.
- Excellent writing skills and the ability to translate foreign policy issues across a range of materials and for a range of audiences.
- Previous experience in foreign policy, human rights, and international affairs strongly preferred.
- Collaborative, able to work with a range of different leaders and partners, and mission-driven.
- Willing to travel for occasional programmatic events and meetings.
