Policy Advisor – Internal Gas Market

Energy Traders Europe

Position description

Energy Traders Europe represents 180 companies from over 30 European countries. Those companies trade electricity, gas, carbon and various other products. We aim to make sure that power and gas markets are well-designed, competitive and pan-European. This allows them to make the biggest possible contribution to keeping costs down, ensuring security of supply, ensuring competitiveness and enabling the transition to a carbon neutral economy. We represent our member companies’ interests by working with decision makers to shape the design of markets, by developing standard contracts which make trading simpler and by developing IT standards to make the exchange of transaction data easier. About the role

The gas market continues to play an important role in securing Europe’s energy supplies and in the ongoing decarbonisation of the economy. The internal gas market has helped the EU withstand one of the largest energy crises by enabling access to alternative supply sources and encouraging energy savings at times of scarcity. While this adaptability helps navigating the complicated geopolitical situation of today, the gas market can also play a role in driving decarbonisation. The EU is seeking to achieve growth of the market to 35bcm of biomethane and 20 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030.

The effectiveness of the internal gas market, both in terms of ensuring the supplies we need and contributing to decarbonisation, will depend on how integrated national markets are and on whether gas can be traded freely between countries. This level of integration differs throughout Europe and deviations from the agreed EU rules are becoming increasingly frequent, limiting the benefits of cross-border trading at a time when the EU is seeking to improve industrial competitiveness. Thus, Energy Traders Europe is focused on working with policy makers to ensure the consistent application of the EU acquis, on removing barriers to trade and on enabling a stable, future-proof environment to trade gas across Europe.

The role we are seeking to fill:

We are seeking a person who can understand the complexities of the gas market and identify the barriers which the regulatory environment could create for our member companies. That person should be comfortable working with senior stakeholders to make the case to change those rules and should be capable of identifying ways in which the rules could evolve.
