Summary
The Office of Strategic Communications (OSC) provides communications direction and guidance to stakeholders across the NATO enterprise and coordinates strategic communications activities across all NATO civilian and military bodies. The Office carries out full-spectrum communications, analysing the information environment, designing and creating content, managing communications technology and platforms, overseeing media relations, and engaging audiences through a wide range of channels.
The Social Media Officer advocates for a digital-first communications culture and is the enemy of boring content, helping to drive reach, engagement and growth in @NATO social media channels. The incumbent keeps pace with digital trends and ensures communication helps to deliver the Alliance’s strategic communication objectives and political priorities.
Qualifications and Experience
The incumbent must:
- Possess a university degree in communications, international affairs or a related discipline.
- Have a minimum of 3 years of experience and expertise in managing multiple social media channels, platforms (e.g. Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok), monitoring and assessment tools.
- Demonstrate keen political awareness, have knowledge of current events and proven ability to communicate creatively, signal relevance and engage varied audiences.
- Have expertise in navigating an evolving digital landscape and a strong understanding of the changing technical elements of social media platforms and how to harness each of them.
- Possess the following minimum levels of NATO’s official languages (English/French): V (“Advanced”) in one; I (“Beginner”) in the other.
The following would be considered an advantage:
- Knowledge of NATO’s organisational structure and affiliated organisations.
- Experience in campaigns and localisation for segmented international audiences.
- Experience creating microcontent such as basic picture and video research and editing, copywriting and simple graphic design.
Main Accountabilities
- Planning and Execution. Manage select @NATO social media channels and provide back-up and support to colleagues who lead on other channels. Under the direction of the Head, Social Media and in coordination with the Social Media Manager; conceive, post and monitor all daily content on select @NATO flagship social media channels and autonomously undertake community management. Identify and implement strategic use of paid advertising in support of priorities.
- Project Management. Shape the ideas, planning, tactics and strategy on these channels for key activities such as ministerials and summits, campaigns and priority communication efforts. Undertake lead and point of contact roles for specific communication activities such as campaigns or large-scale events, including responsibility for the strategic approach, implementation, and the managing of external contractors, agencies or engagement with partners and stakeholders.
- Knowledge Management. Undertake assessment, community management and social listening for select @NATO social media channels, identifying trends and opportunities to contribute to a feedback loop that helps to instill a data and audience-led approach to our content creation. Support assessment to continue to improve the way the OSC delivers NATO’s communication goals. Coordinate own efforts within the Section and across the Organization to ensure that appropriate knowledge management systems and mechanisms are in place.
- Expertise Development. Continuously monitor, analyse and maintain understanding of the changing social media landscape in order to adapt and iterate NATO’s communications. Pro-actively test, iterate and advise the Head, Social Media on the use of new tactics and tools and propose improvements to existing approaches and updates to strategy. Provide consultancy and technical expertise, including delivering presentations, training and seminars to uplift Alliance capabilities.

Interrelationships
Reporting Line: The incumbent reports to the Head, Social Media.
Interactions: The incumbent is required to maintain close working relationships with other teams in OSC as well as with other internal and external contacts in the field of digital outreach, including NATO Commands.
