The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) is a 501(c)(3) independent, international, non-profit advocacy organization based in Washington, D.C., with a proven record of triggering and affecting systemic change to protect the Earth’s environment. For more than three decades, EIA has established a unique paradigm of methods to drive change – including pioneering the use of undercover investigative techniques to expose environmental crime and drive impact. These crimes include illegal trade in endangered wildlife, illegal logging and associated trade in illegal timber, environmental violations in the extractives sector, and the trade in both climate-damaging and ozone-layer-depleting gases.
EIA’s Climate Campaign combines data analysis, research, investigations, and policy advocacy to drive change at the international, national, and sub-national levels. Our work includes analyzing emissions and industry data, tracking production and trade in fluorinated gases, developing public-facing data and mapping tools, evaluating climate policies, and translating technical evidence into compelling advocacy.
Position Description
EIA is seeking a Climate Data Analyst to join our Climate Campaign and support our efforts to reduce emissions of potent greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances, particularly fluorinated gases used in cooling.
The Climate Data Analyst will analyze environmental, emissions, industry, trade, and other datasets; conduct technical and policy research; and translate findings into useful products for EIA’s Climate investigations, advocacy, and public-facing work.
We are looking for a highly curious, resourceful, and technically adventurous candidate with strong quantitative and Excel skills, who can work with messy, complex datasets, identify meaningful patterns, take ownership of defined analytical questions, and learn unfamiliar tools and subject-matter quickly.
Our ideal candidate demonstrates high-agency and eagerness to learn and is comfortable tackling unfamiliar problems, teaching themselves new approaches, experimenting with technology, and turning analysis into useful campaign work.

Main Roles and Responsibilities
- Analyze environmental, emissions, industry, trade, and other datasets to identify trends, inconsistencies, emerging issues, and opportunities for climate action.
- Collect, clean, organize, validate, document, and maintain datasets from government, industry, scientific, and open-source sources.
- Explore and proactively engage in defined analytical questions and develop thoughtful approaches to investigate them.
- Conduct policy and technical research on fluorinated gases, cooling technologies, emissions, production and trade, and related climate issues.
- Use advanced Excel and analytical/programming tools to conduct quantitative analysis and develop clear, reproducible findings.
- Conduct advanced analyses using Python, R, or similar languages to manipulate datasets, automate processes, and support more sophisticated research projects.
- Translate quantitative and technical findings into clear reports, briefings, fact sheets, presentations, web content, and other campaign products.
- Use AI tools like Claude Code or Codex to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of coding projects.
- Support the development of maps, data visualizations, databases, and other public-facing analytical tools, including geospatial analyses.
- Assist with quantitative modeling and scenario analysis related to greenhouse gas emissions, refrigerant use, lifecycle emissions, production, consumption, or other Climate Campaign priorities.
- Work with campaign colleagues to develop evidence-based investigations and advocacy strategies.
- Assess data quality, limitations, assumptions, and sources and maintain accurate, reproducible analytical workflows.
- Support EIA’s participation in international meetings and negotiations through research, data analysis, briefing materials, and meeting preparation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preparation in data science, statistics, environmental science, computer science, economics, mathematics, engineering, GIS, or a related discipline.
- At least years of relevant professional, internship, academic and research experience.
- Strong quantitative and data analysis skills, including the ability to work effectively and independently with complex datasets and identify meaningful patterns.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience with functions such as lookups, pivot tables, data cleaning and conditional calculations.
- Working proficiency in at least one programming or analytical tool, such as Python, R, or SQL, for data analysis, automation, or visualization.
- Strong attention to data quality, detail, documentation, reproducibility, and accuracy.
- Ability to communicate quantitative and technical findings clearly through charts, tables, visualizations, and concise written analyses.
- Intellectual curiosity, resourcefulness, and demonstrated ability to learn new tools and subject matter quickly.
- Strong interest in climate change, environmental protection, and EIA’s approach of using evidence, investigations, and advocacy to drive systemic change.
Additional Qualifications
Experience with any of the following is a plus, but is not required:
- Working knowledge of greenhouse gases, such asHFCs, CO2, CH4, cooling technologies or climate policy.
- Experience with geospatial data, or mapping tools like QGIS, ArcGIS, or Mapbox.
- Quantitative modeling, emissions estimates, scenario analysis, or, forecasting.
- Large public datasets, APIs, government databases, corporate or facility-level data, or international trade data.
- Creating dashboards, interactive visualizations, databases, or public-facing analytical tools.
- Git/GitHub or other tools for version control and collaborative analytical workflows.
- Open-source intelligence (OSINT) and combining information from multiple datasets and sources.
- The Montreal Protocol, Kigali Amendment, Paris Agreement, or related national and regional policies.
- Knowledge of greenhouse gas emissions accounting, atmospheric monitoring, remote sensing, lifecycle analysis, or greenhouse gas detection and monitoring technologies.
- Experience working with partners in Africa, Asia, or Latin America.
- Additional language skills in Mandarin or Spanish.
